The full game is out on Tuesday and a demo has been released today on switch, PS4, Steam and Xbox.

It's more of the same hack and slash fun but with additional attacks/specials mapped to shoulder buttons much like One Piece Warriors 4 and Fate Extella Link.

I've enjoyed the demo and the characters all play differently with faster than expected gameplay and no slowdown on PlayStation at least.

Anyone else getting it?

I like the Warriors games and am keen to try this out, Godzilla. The graphics appear to have an almost cell-shaded style, different to previously, but it seems to work well. I think I'll be holding out for a lower-price, though.

My problem with the Musou games is there are just too many of them and they are all largely the same. I reckon if you are a fan of the source material you’ll like the game for example I really liked Dragon Quest Heroes and Fist of the North Star Ken’s Rage but have no real interest in other entries in the series bar perhaps Hyrule Warriors.

I do like the series but, to be fair, I've only dabbled rather than really got into the games. They are pretty similar but I guess that is just their style.

I like how the series has broadened into other franchises; as you say, Cumberdanes, with Dragon Quest, FotNS and Hyrule - plus we have seen Fire Emblem and Berzerk.

They're definitely games I want to play more of. Tbh my recent chat about maybe getting a PS5 seems preposterous when there are so many last-gen games I still want to play. Dynasty Warriors 8 and Berzerk are on the list!

Literally what is the difference between them? I tried the demo for the Zelda themed one on Switch and I may as well if been playing Dynasty Warriors 5 on PS2 released 16 years ago.

Just the story and settings really, the gameplay hasn’t really changed much (unless you include Dynasty Warriors 1 which was a Vs. fighter) . In Ken’s Rage you play through the storyline from Fist of the North Star up to Kenshiro defeating Souther.

They are very similar but that's just the genre, really. Naturally, they're all Warriors-styled gameplay; kinda in the way that, say, PES is always football, Forza is always driving and Farming Simulator is always farming. Each year a new one(s) appears and it refines the gameplay and has some cooler graphics. The recent use of other themes/franchises is to expand the audience to folk who may be unfamiliar with the Warriors genre.

In the same way that all Street Fighter games are the same or all Assassin's Creed games are the same.

I think what makes it seem like there are a lot of them is the number of expansions/rereleases like xtreme legends and empires. Consider this is the fifth numbered entry though for Samurai Warriors and that doesn't sound unreasonable to me.

That’s a fair point but I don’t really play those either for similar reasons. For me SF peaked with Alpha 3 and 3rd Strike.

Not including spin offs, re-releases and stand alone titles like Bladestorm or Arslan there are over 30 titles in the Musou franchise which is a few more than say SF or AC.

If you start looking at stuff handheld spin offs and such like you’re probably looking at maybe double that.

So far 5 seems to have made some good choices with less characters and more diversity between them.

I've always loved musou games as they are relaxing and simple fun.

I'd recommend Fire Emblem Warriors and it's season pass on Switch. Easily the best musou game on the system, it runs very well and had a huge adventure mode.

On PS4/PS5 - Beserk is excellent, with a detailed story and plenty of cut scenes. One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 has some hug characters and a good amount of customisation thanks to assignable special moved. Also Fate Extella Link has great characters, tons of enemies and massive amount of customisation.

Rumors of a my hero academia musou game started last month but nothing has been confirmed. Dragon Ball, final fantasy, guilty gear, Godzilla, Thundercats and basically every action based pop culture thing would make a good musou game.

I am actually surprised there isn’t a Final Fantasy one since they’ve done 2 Dragon Quest Heroes games.

Sign me up for Masters of the Universe Warriors.

I'll keep you posted, I'm expecting good things!

To the wider point made in the thread of the musou games being pretty samey for me I enjoy them because I have an interest in that time period (and Romance of the Thee Kingdoms/Dynasty Warriors). There is also usually a big enough gap between games for them not to feel overdone. I've also planned some of my trips to Japan around stuff in the games, I've been to Kawanakajima and Zenkoji, I've also been to Kuwana to see the statue of Tadakatsu Honda, Sendai to see Date Masamune's castle. So for me it's definitely a historical interest that's partially at play.

That’s what I was saying originally. Although there are a lot of them if you like the setting you’ll probably like the game. The historic ones aren’t really for me but I loved Dragon Quest Heroes.

Finished the main story in this today. It is presented like Hyrule Warriors Complete Edition with a left to right story with chapters and then these branch off into sub stories on occasion. The main quest also has a secondary quest line which runs alongside it and has a different main character.

The other mode in the game is the conquest mode which is a list of maps/scenarios with different difficulty star ratings and the aim is to keep the base safe for about 5 minutes while fighting off waves and doing secondary objectives. The main point of this mode is to collect stuff to upgrade blacksmith, shop etc to unlock more stuff.

Gameplay is fast, the triangle button is a dash forward attack and can be used to get around fast. Right shoulder button brings up 4 more ultimate attacks mapped to the face buttons and these recharge quickly. My highest kills per map is just over 3k and the flow of the game is really nice with a very polished feel to it. 60 FPS without slowdown (running on PS5)

Graphically it's pretty and very clean. Music is nice enough and voice acting is Japanese only so in the heat of battle I'm missing a lot as I don't have time to read a load of text.

The low number of characters isn't a massive problem but what is is the interchangeable weapons. So multiple people share the same weapons. Meaning that two hammmer users will pretty much be the same character in a different skin. You can give people different weapon types but it's just not as unique or interesting as it could be.

I'm enjoying the game and would describe it as a combination of Fire Emblem Warriors and Warriors Orchi 4. More grounded than Pirate Warriors 4 or Hyrule Warriors but very fast and polished too. Recommended for hack and slash fans.

Hopefully this high standard is going to be applied to the new version of Dynasty Warriors 9.

I just got this today. Not had much of a chance to play it but hoping to over the weekend. Initial thoughts:

Gameplay is great fun and I'm loving it so far

Graphically it's amazing. Loving the cel shaded look.

The soundtrack is good. Not amazing but good. But then for me the soundtrack peaked in SW2.

Some of the generals designs feel a little underwhelming. I kept losing Honda Tadakatsu in the middle of a fight, it just felt as if he blended in with the rank and file soldiers. Lock on helped but someone as important as him shouldn't look like a regular soldier. I'm hoping this isn't a trend go forwards into the game

I've actually been out of the loop prior to buying it. I'm hearing that it's a lot more focused on a specific time period than other games. I'm not sure how I feel about this. It's an interesting direction but I do really love Sekigahara, the Kyushu and Shikoku campaigns, and Kawanakajima. I'm assuming the tighter focus will also mean a roster cut too. The cynic in me is assuming these may be released as an add-on like Xtreme Legends was for the second game.

I'll give more thoughts when I've given it a fair go
