Watched some new co-op of this and it’s the usual painting of targets and hum drum shooty as always. It’s basically Ghost Recon Wildlands in first person.

Lazy, considering how the AC team shook up that series.

What did AC do that was any different? The fundamentals are the same as any AC game but the world is more polished. In this they've abandoned the towers for more organic world discovery which is a big shake up for the genre and presumably influenced by Zelda.

An FPS is always going to have shooting, if it's as enjoyable as previous FC games I'll be happy.

AC Origins added Wildlife and habitats, massively changed combat to be more like The Witcher/Dark Souls, has swimming under water (Black Flag forced you to use a diving bell), plus the weapons and armour have different levels as do the enemies and wildlife.

There is a reason it is arguably the best AC game, I can’t see this being the best Far Cry game at all. I think they should reboot this franchise and make it really hard, Ditch way points and guff, get rid of map on screen and have it back on original Island adding in some survival elements.

They could ditch way points and map via hugely tweakable HUD options, which FC often has.

+1 to being happy if it's as enjoyable as 4. (Enjoyed 3. Loved 4.)

+1 to increased difficulty if it's by means of improved enemy AI.

-10 to it introducing survival game elements.

I do like survival mechanics and know I’m alone in that.

I can understand wanting a reboot if FC was a annual release, but it's been so long since 4 was released that I think smaller tweaks are acceptable. Especially when one of said tweaks removes a series/publisher mainstay. And the bread and butter of any FPS is it's gunplay and that is something FC 4 and 3 did *very* well.

I’m of the opposite opinion, I think small tweaks are the problem, it’s been the same game now since 3, mental evil protagonist, check, enemy camps, check, Wildlife attaching you, check, vehicles, check, it’s all too samey.

Primal brought in taming and that’s in this but I don’t think this will review well, it’s a tired formula as AC was.

What else do you do though? BoTW followed almost

Far Cry had the animals before AC, the system is taken directly out of Far Cry. The combat in AC is very, very basic but the shooting in Far Cry is as good as anything else out there. I know the AI is pretty simplistic but scoping out an enemy base and taking every down is still great fun.

Everything about that idea for a reboot puts me right off. I'm reqlly intetested to see how gopd the changes are, BoTW is essentially the Ubisoft open world formula and people think that's the best game ever.

Why, because it has towers?

Yeah, that's probably the defining attribute of Ubisoft open world games as well as the climbing.

Zelda's open world is such a huge step above anything Ubisoft have done it's not even worth comparing them.

Although apparently you can compare it to Prey.

That's right, I'm never letting that go.

In what way? The usual open world tropes with added complete rock circles, shoot baloons with arrows and anti fun systems.

GRCade out doing itself with good old wrongness today.

Great explanation.

For the record I played Origins very soon after playing BoTW, while Zelda is clearly the better game it's hardly streets ahead.

I’m....agreeing with Hime...??!!

Yeah I’d put AC Origins on a par with BOTW tbh.

I’d put both of them miles ahead of Far Cry 4 though.

I guess it's just horses for courses, I loved Far Cry 4 and it's one of the few games I've played with genuine emergent gameplay.
