So you play as the junior deputy.
Of what?

I am guessing a local law enforcement agency - in which case a storyline where you are in 'Ariel dog fights' and just plain ol killing any folk sounds stupid.

Also what happens to the FBI, national guard and other armed forces?

Reads like a pile of wank, but I guess I will reserve judgment for actual gameplay and reviews.

Does this mean that they're all wearing really clean clothes, or it involves mermaids, or what?

Full co-op is interesting, but it's still Far Cry.

Customisable characters is a good thing, though.

You can decide whether to have a penis or a vagina and what colour it is. Not really ground breaking, is it?

It's more than they usually offer, so it's a step in the right direction

It's a FPS though, you can't even see your character.

You can see everything but your face...

I would be amazed if characters don't react differently to you based on gender and skin colour choice.

Ubi could go pretty far with it if they wanted, but I expect it will be pretty basic. Your suggestion has to be the minimum, though.

Easy mode is white male.

The odd time I've played as a female in RPGs it's quite eye opening how much this isn't the case. Yes, there'll be slight differences in the nouns they use in dialogue but the general way NPC's behave towards you doesn't change whatever you look like. It reveals how much focus developers really put on the teen-30s male audience over anyone else. I doubt Ubisoft of all people will do things any differently.

Apparently people are claiming that Far Cry 5 is a White Genocide Simulator.

And then there is Mount and Blade

This has grabbed my interest, great time to do a game like this with the left/right divide currently so heated. Perhaps it's going to be something along the lines of a new civil war breaking out.

Either way I get a very Bioshock Infinite vibe coming from it which is a good thing.

People also claimed BioShock Infinite was a white people murder simulator. We call these people "Bigots" specifically of the "Triggered" subgenus.

If they look at this and think it's a white genocide simulator do they also look at the Lord of the Rings games and think they're Ork genocide simulators?
If they just want to be dicks then surely every FPS is a murder simulator?

Re: Far Cry 5 - 27/02 - Ditching towers *and* mini-map!

Lead writer on why they're ditching towers and mini-map:

We recently spoke with the game’s lead writer Drew Holmes, and when we asked him just why Ubisoft had made this decision, he said some very encouraging things.

“I think it’s because it helps increase exploration,” Holmes said. “I think in Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4 you got into a rhythm of, ‘the only way that I can find out what to do in this area is to go climb a tower, hit a button and all of these things pop up.’ We really wanted to focus on exploration with a sense of, ‘I’m not sure what to do or where to go’.”

“I think when you set a game in a more familiar setting like Montana, we wanted to compare it to, ‘what would I do in this situation?'” Holmes continued. “I’d have to go and try and meet some locals, see if they’d do anything. Or go to a town and see if there’s anything to do around there. So the goal really was to get rid of the towers as a way of forcing me to interact with the people, pay attention to my surroundings. And sort of intuitively figure out, ‘well, if there’s a town here, there’s a gas station down the road,’ so everything sort of feels like a believable world.”

Holmes then went on to tackle the removal of the mini-map from the game, a first for the series. “The removal of the mini map was so you’re not staring at a little corner of your screen saying, ‘what’s new in the world?'” he said. “You’ve got to actually pay attention to the world and making sure that the art side is doing a good job of making sure there are good landmarks to orient yourself. That it becomes more of less the game guiding you on where to go, and more of you saying, ‘where do I want to go, what do I want to do today?'”

I'm all for the removal of the mini-map just as long as it doesn't result in some of kind of intrusive, immersion ruining waypoint layover.
