Not only that, the cluster of elliptical galaxies in the centre are "only" 4.6 billion light years away, but the red arcs that seem to spin around the centre of the image are galaxies over 13 billion light years away that we are seeing because the light from them is being gravitationally lensed around that central cluster!

The sparkling of the near stars are diffraction spikes caused by the support structs on the mirror - the six spike pattern comes from the 3 struct design, I like how you can match up the diffraction spikes in the images to the diagram on that wikipedia page to images of the telescope!

Since the telescope is able to capture such distant objects in fine detail, maybe they should get it to look at the alpha centauri star system and see if it can pick up an exo planet.
