I'm not saying it can't work if implemented with careful balancing so the stats don't have an overbearing impact, but unfortunately in this game they are pretty overbearing. I still remember playing the first few levels, you knock enemies over and wait for them to get up a ridiculous amount of times because you do so little damage, it feels really bad.

I'm no Scott Pilgrim aficionado but I Was keen on this release because of fond memories of the (?demo of the) first. The visual style and music was enough of a vibe to justify my buying again, because I often fancy that general style and the way chunky gameplay gives it a bit of tangible feel, you know?

But I do think it sounds like you might be on to something. And I say that mainly because I bought River City Girls in the hope of some of that some bubblegum pop culture cool, but Man the enemies take too many hits in that game! It's such a shame because the game looks and sounds great (though the map and writing are a bit crap) but the game feels like a bit of a slog at times because of how robust the enemies are :(

Still, Scott Pilgrim I'm still tempted by... That vibe!

This is one of those games where they added needless stats to try and prop up the meh gameplay. There's nothing to get better at or master so they give you the illusion of progress by making the numbers get bigger.

Without the license this would just be another average indie game that nobody paid attention to.

The music is the only standout part about it.

Started this, considering I’ve got it on the lowest setting of ‘Average Joe’ I still seem to be getting damaged a lot on the first level :dread: I’ve read this is normal for the first play through though? Or am I just woefully poor at it? (I generally am poor at side scrolling beat em ups anyway, only reason I’ve bought this is because it’s Scott Pilgrim )

You start off pretty weak, it balances out better once you've grinded a few levels. iirc finding the secret shop entrances can be pretty helpful? I might be misremembering how useful they are though!

A game that starts badly balanced and only gets better once you've grinded? Wow, where do I sign up!

I've always said it has some balancing issues but that doesn't stop it being a great game, just not a perfect one! As with River City Girls I think it balances better to co-op, but to a greater extent with Scott Pilgrim because of it being up to 4 players. Pretty sure I originally played through this on PS3 in three player, some damage sponge enemies are less of a chore when you're juggling them between multiple players.

So I should do the first level a few times? didn’t actually find it too bad in the latter half, fight against Matthew Patel was really good to be honest!

If I remember right, near the end of the first level you can find a secret shop that sells a bionic arm that great increases your attack power so might be worth hunting that out

Nah just play it through as you are!

This goes up for pre-order with Limited Run later today, I'll be getting it on Switch. Never thought I'd be able to get this game physically!

This is probably what I was half remembering!

Honestly I’m tempted to pre order it as well, you can order it for about a month can’t you before it goes off sale? Suppose I best play through most of it first though before buying it again, having it physical would be really nice and could then sit on a shelf with both sets of the books, films and whatever else I got Scott Pilgrim related in the future

Re the secret shop, I think I’ll definitely look that up too, thanks!

Do the books and records you can buy in the first level do anything or are they just there to collect?

Do they not increase certain stats? I might be wrong but I thought they were stat boosts

Pro tip, in the first level you will come across a video shop that has nothing on sale as Scott needs to pay back what he owes. Pay this off when you can as then you can buy some really good stat boosting gear.

I’ve no idea, I didn’t look into the other ones as I was just saving for the arm! Can you buy the arm more than once for extra power? Or does it just stay on sale for the different characters?

What’s the point in that? Hardly a ‘Complete’ edition when you have to sign into a Ubisoft account to download one of the extra characters :fp:

I think you can only buy it once per character, been a while since I last played it haha

Presumed as much, being able to buy it indefinitely would make the game rather trivial.

I could play that opening level on repeat. THe action in this game is so satisfying and the music to level 1 is incredibly catchy.

I played the opening level till I could afford the upgraded arm, really got into the swing of the combat after a few runs and it was a lot of fun when it clicked alongside the new moves.

It doesn't really get better balanced. You just keep up with the current stage you are on

When you go back to earlier levels you just one shot everything, which isn't as fun as it sounds.

This is why I really don't like the game. The stat boosting stuff just unbalances everything for no real reason.

I think character level keeping pace with stage level is pretty much the definition of balance in an RPG
