The interesting thing for me about this independence thing is that it's believed that it will take 18 months for Scotland to become independent should they get a yes vote. Surely in this time there is the potential that either a significant number of people could move north or south. This could cause huge problems to both economies. A new Scotland could be devastated by a lose of a huge number of dissatisfied no voters. Or a million people could move north looking for new opportunities. Surely also anyone with a British passport could move north before the official independence date and effectively make themselves scottish over night.

To be fair, this is functionally no different between any two EU nations.

There is definitely a more prevalent ugly element among the Yes supporters than No, letting the rest of them down. I'm really worried about what will happen if there's a narrow No victory.

You needn't be.

Do you really think it'll be 62% yes timeghost?

No what I mean is they can do this for the next 18 months but then when Scotland is officially independent they won't be able to just do that unless Scotland agrees to an open border.

It would need to be a non-state, like Washington D.C., so as to not give any state the benefit of hosting the capital.

Do you feel Scotland may not join the EU, then?

Not immediately it wont. And there are very valid concerns of their entry being blocked by countries like Spain, since any new member must be approved by all of the existing member states.

Scotland would have no problem becoming an EU member whatsoever.

It's a nice, democratic place. (Edit: Scotland that is, not the EU)

Entering the Eurozone would be a trickier matter, but I think that would be a mistake anyway.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Really?

Yeah, slightly bizarre eh.

If you go on their site and watch the scrolling banner it says they've paid out to anyone who bet before yesterday morning.

Edit: In fact, the BBC picked up on it http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29232538

Also I'm certain, like octoroc, that Scotland would get a place in the EU without any real hassle. I think that's the general consensus now.

53% no seems probable.

I forsee a 60% no vote if not higher. The worrying thing as well is I only think there's going to be a 50-60% voter turnout.

As someone mentioned before, all it takes is 1% of doubt in your mind to make you not vote yes as it's such an important decision to make so I think that'll sway a lot more people to a no rather than yes vote. I hope in the case of a no victory that Westminister will give the Scottish more power to govern themselves or give them more representation in the UK parliment.

60% yes

If I'm going by my FB feed though, it will be 85-90% yes.

There's no way the voter turnout will be anything like 50%. If it's substantially under 80 I'll be very surprised. Although having said that people are lazy strawberry floaters so you never know.

My FB feed seems mainly yes voters too but I think they just tend to be more vocal in their support.

Why would the Record include his opinion in an article with nothing to do with him?

Stiglitz is the 4th most influential economist in the world today based on academic citations,[10] and in 2011 he was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.[11] Stiglitz's work focuses on income distribution, asset risk management, corporate governance, and international trade, and is the author of ten books, with his latest, The Price of Inequality (2012), hitting The New York Times best seller list.[12]

I think he knows what he's talking about more than you do and probably the 13 college lecturers the daily record managed to cobble together to promote their agenda.

An interesting point is that the really high registration might make it a bit of a hassle to vote if you're just turning up quickly after work or something. So those voting either way from positions of apathy might just go "oh sod it".
