[DISCUSSION] Scottish Independence - It's a No!

Unless the No voters are genuinely too scared to speak up and this has affected polls, then this could be a big yes. If you're a Scot, regardless of whether you want the Union, the idea of 'not being controlled by London' and making your own decisions is going to be so appealing that it wins over any discussion of the mundane practicalities of separation.

Seeing some Eastern European countries like Yugoslavia break up into separate countries seemed pointless to me because they were all from the same area just sub-categorising themselves and making new smaller nations. So looking at what's happening in the UK I know the Scottish, the Welsh and the English all have their own identity but they also all live on the same island so why can't national pride and the union be compatible? But them I'm not Scottish.

If Scotland does separate I hope Alex Salmond won't then be in a rush to sign over his new nations powers to Europe.

Off to vote in a minute, after all my arguing against the yes vote that's the way I'm going to go. Economically I think it's a bad idea but I can't legitimately call myself a socialist and vote against the only chance this country has of getting proper left wing governance.

From a neutral perspective, it would actually be a lot more interesting to see a Yes vote. In a kind of 'pull up the deckchairs, get some popcorn and watch from the sidelines' type way.

Some of the worst-case scenarios from the No campaign about what would happen to Scotland are quite alarming. But then a lot of the fantastical claims from the Yes campaign are very wishy-washy too. Both are undoubtedly exaggerating, but who's exaggerating the most...?

Christ alone knows what's actually best for the Scottish people. Even if I were Scottish myself I'm not sure I could honestly work out what would be best for my country.

I wonder if Quebec's going to make another bid for independence if Scotland votes yes? Its independence movement could learn a lot from Scotland's, which in turn looked to Quebec to see what not to do; ask overly complicated questions on the ballot, rush the whole affair, etc. I'm sure other places are looking to Scotland to see if its approach works too.

Yes, but it would move things on from the ifs, buts, are you voting no, are you voting yes, and all the "we're so hard done by" whining.

At least then we'd be able to draw the lines of how it's all going to work and no one way or another what's happening without all the irritating speculation.

That would all just be replaced with speculation over what's going to happen to Scotland and ifs and buts over pretty much every little facet of the split.

A yes vote in Scotland is going to see it spread to other regions in the uk, hopefully.

This time next year we will all be living in tented villages, fighting over tin openers.

But it moves things on from the same questions that have been asked for the last year or so. At least it changes things up a bit. So tedious hearing the same things over and over.

Also: Scotland thinks it's neglected by the media? It should spare a thought for northern England (Guardian; CIF)

I don't care Dan, I just hope it ignites the rest of the uk. If this gets people actually talking and getting engaged in politics and wanting to make real change to their life's (instead of just voting for strawberry floating ukip) then that can only be good.
