I suspect the commercial banks send the cash back north of the border to be redispensed through cash machines there. I don't recall ever getting a Scottish note out of an English ATM.

Some money is kept to be distributed as floats for tills and stuff.

Yes indeed. I doubt the scottish money is part of that in England though. Who needs the hassle after all.

Cash it in at the bank no hassle? Or leave it in the float to potentially provoke a debate with someone when you hand it back as change?

Of course it goes to the bank!

I remember when I was in Germany getting some cash exchanged in a little travel shop place. The guy serving immediately identified my Scottish accent and couldn't hide his disgust at me handing over English notes. He looked genuinely angry and asked why I had no Scottish ones :lol:

So far I've avoided getting any Scottish notes in my change but I only have 20s left now so there's always a chance when I get something to eat in a bit.
