Update: the writing got a lot better too. I don't know why. You'd think your translators and writers might strive to make a good first impression above all other things. Nope. Now we've had a telegraphed twist that, even if I knew there would be a twist, I didn't see coming in this form; a pirate first mate who parrots JRPG tropes; and the odd bit of effective worldbuilding and atmosphere.

I'll probably keep narrating this until somebody responds, but I'm moving into solid recommendation territory with this one.

Just played the first hour and can already tell this is going to be great.

The pixel art is glorious.

It looks gorgeous tbf, I'm gonna get to it over Christmas I think, too much on at the moment.

It's rather good, isn't it?

Utterly loving it so far, the pixel graphics, music and combat are fantastic.

I think people overvalue storytelling in games nowadays, sure it's nice to have a gripping plot but for me the most important factor is the gameplay loop, a game can have a epic story but if it's boring to play then I'll ditch it.

I’m much the same but this one just bugged me

Funnily enough a game critic I watch put out a review of this and he touched on some of the things that bugged me

i feel i should probably explain that when i first found out about the game i was interested but the demo put me off so i'm hanging around here to see if anything will swing me back round

Around 5 or 6 hours into this and still really enjoying it, kind of reminds me of Golden Sun with a bit of Phantasy Star and possiby Story of Thor.

I might make a start on it once I've finished Oxenfree, over the weekend at some point if I get a couple of hours, as it does look pretty good and I've been looking for something to get me back using the service again before Forza in early October anyway.

Edit, got a free hour this afternoon, so hoping to make a start on this.

Ok, so I don't think I'm far off finishing off the tutorial, just got the relics that can add HP and auto heal, alongside one that alerts you for timing on blocking/getting critical type hits on enemies. Story seems almost quite standard for a retro inspired JRPG? Not bad so far, but I'm guessing one of the end game villains is blatantly obvious from the start :lol:

First hour has been very good really, no idea how long it is, but something to chip away at for an hour or two here and there, it'll be taking a back seat as soon as the Pokémon DLC comes out on Wednesday though.

Despite having it included on both PS+ and Gamepass, I’ve gone and bought this on Steam because I wanted it for the Deck and what a perfect fit. Mercifully light on the battery too. I just sat and played it for 3 hours straight and only got through about 50% of the battery.

Possible GOTY for me (haven't played Baldur's Gate III yet though), it's just a brilliant bit of retro goodness and I love it.
