You don’t have to use a mic if don’t want to.

I don’t mind playing alone, it’s a stunning looking game and with the soft twangs is music, the wind in your sails and the ocean it can make for an enjoyable voyage. I agree that it’s better with mates tho.

Yeah, you could join a group, even join the chat to hear what others are saying but not speak yourself and just use the in-game text 'bubbles'. I only say join chat so you can hear if someone spots a ship or the like. You wouldn't need to do it, but it may be easier for you :D

The game is one of the prettiest I've seen and I love the varies weather too. Hate the Devil#s Reach or whatever it's called, strawberry floating volcanos blowing up my ships

Cheers. To be honest I’m fine when I’m up and running, it’s more the feeling that I’m letting others down by not knowing what I’m doing etc.

As long as you can respond to any action that needs to happen, and help when required, I'm sure the lack of direct communication would matter little. As stated, there's pre-set phrases that can be used, so it's not like communication is a complete non-entity.

I'm yet to go anywhere near the newest islands, since I highly doubt they're suitable for solo players.

Playing this nightly with my daughter, she’s hooked now. We usually do the Daily Quest and a few extra bits. We failed in about 22k each after 1 hour tonight diving into 2 sunken ships, one containing a Reapers chest. Everyone could see Our ship on map as we made our way to Reapers Island, tense as it was scanning the horizon we made it for 15K each!

Sea of Thieves adding battles against wraith-spewing ghost ships in next week's update

Plus a shanty select and eight new tunes!

In terms of new content, however, next week's major new addition comes in the form of ghost ships, a brand-new quest type for the Order of Souls Trading Company. Once a voyage has been accepted, players can take to the seas and prepare to encounter the new enemy types, which rent open the air itself to sail across the boundary between the living and the dead.

The ensuing encounter looks to play out somewhat similarly to Sea of Thieves' existing skeleton fleet battles, pitting players against multiple ships at once. However, ghost ships - which looks suitably sinister, thanks to their deathly green hues - are armed with fearsome supernatural abilities not accessible to their bony brethren.

There are phantom cannonballs, which take the form of hooded spirits able to sweep menacingly through the air, and the considerably more intimidating wraith balls - screaming faces which can knock a ship back with tremendous force, sending it off course and doing immense hull damage at the same time.

What's more, usual naval combat tactics will need to be adapted here; players attempting to escape the reach of a ghost ship's cannonballs by attacking from the rear will find they drop explosive barrels in their wake - which will need to be eliminated by some swift, sharp Eye of Reach shooting to proceed safely.

Sea of Thieves' other big addition next week - which, in truth, is very likely to be the highlight of today's announcements, given how long the feature has been requested - is the arrival of a new shanty selection tool, enabling pirates to, finally, pick the exact musical ditty they want to play, rather than having to tediously cycle through a random rotation of tunes first.

That's not quite it though! Rare has finally overcome the technical issues it's mentioned previously in regards to implementing additional multi-instrument shanties in-game, and next week's update with introduce a whopping eight new nautical bops for players to get stuck into.

Out on Wed 17th. Sounds like the game has been doing great on Steam & Twitch.

Yes, but much of that guide would have been very useful at launch.

The Tutorial in it would have been useful at launch too. (Despite the fact that I played the beta that had neither and did ok). I still don't quite understand why some people got stumped. Everything has a button prompt....

TBF, SoT really doesn't need a tutorial, it's not hard to work out that for a ship to strawberry floating sail you need to raise the anchor and lower the sails, I bet everyones minds were totally boggled by the weird 'steering wheel looking thing', must have been very difficult to work out what that does.. Surely people aren't that dense? I also laugh at how people love other games for no tutorials or no hand-holding, but when it came to SoT people lambasted it for it. It makes no sense to me.

Yeah, why bother being as welcoming as possible to new players? Much better to leave a few people to founder.
