Yo Ho Ho Ho! The Festival of Giving Begins Today in Sea of Thieves

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and there’s no better place to spend it than on the Sea of Thieves. Put out the decorations, hang up your stocking and enjoy our latest monthly content update, Festival of Giving. This update is available for free to all Sea of Thieves players who have bought the game on Xbox One or on Windows 10 PC, or those who have access to it with Xbox Game Pass. Simply download and install the latest Sea of Thieves update to join in with the Festival of Giving!

Available to all players for free from today, the Festival of Giving update brings with it a stocking full of festive treats. Holiday hijinks are in full swing with Gift Seeker Voyages, offering a pretty penny for pirates who can track down and retrieve a shipment of gifts lost at sea. Speak to Stitcher Jim in any tavern to get started and earn valuable Doubloons for each lost gift you deliver safely to the Masked Stranger at The Reaper’s Hideout. What’s more, in the spirit of the season we’ve introduced the Calendar of Giving, offering all players daily in-game incentives from December 13–24!

For players who find Sea of Thieves in their stockings this year, the Festival of Giving brings with it the Maiden Voyage, a new introductory adventure that’s a must-play for every pirate. For those new to the game or in need of a refresher, it’s an ideal first experience and a ‘safe’ place to hone your skills. For more seasoned pirates, it’s a chance to check out an unexplored island hidden beyond the Devil’s Shroud, meet the Pirate Lord and unlock new Commendations and exclusive cosmetics.

The Maiden Voyage provides players new to Sea of Thieves a safe space to learn about the world they’re about to reach. Taking place on a new island, the Maiden Voyage will teach players actions from the basics such as eating food and using a cutlass, through to sailing their ship and facing off against their first threats out at sea.

The Maiden Voyage – Follow the guidance of the Pirate Lord to pick up basic controls, then explore a new island on the border of the Devil’s Shroud. When you're ready, head out to sea for the first time, breach the Shroud and enter the Sea of Thieves. New pirates are directed to complete the Maiden Voyage before being granted access to Adventure and Arena modes.

Something for Seasoned Pirates? – While the Maiden Voyage is aimed at introducing new players to the world of Sea of Thieves, seasoned pirates may also choose to explore this new island for any secrets it may hold. Players will always have access to the Maiden Voyage from the main menu.

Maiden Voyage Commendations and Rewards – New Commendations are available for pirates uncovering the secrets hidden on Old Sailor Isle. Unlock the Pirates Lord’s Jacket and Magpie’s Fortune Sails as part of your journey through the Devil’s Shroud.

Once the Shroud is broken, new pirates arrive on the Sea of Thieves ready for their first Voyage. The Gold Hoarder Trading Company now offers all new recruits an onboarding Voyage to help teach them the ropes, from voting on Voyages to retrieving treasure.

Mysterious Stranger Introduction – Upon awaking in the Outpost tavern, players are now introduced to the Mysterious Stranger before being directed to the Gold Hoarders Trading Company to begin their first Voyage.

‘X’ Marks the Spot Tutorial – All Gold Hoarder representatives now offer an introductory Voyage, teaching players the basics of Voyages and how to find that elusive ‘X’ before returning with the treasure. New players can visit the Gold Hoarders on any Outpost to pick up their first Voyage!

Maiden Voyage makes me want to give this another try. I only briefly paddled in its waters before. Is it possible to start from scratch as a completely new player? I’d rather wipe the slate clean.

Nice one, cheers. I know some of these persistent online games only let you have one permanent character. Maiden Voyage, I’m heading your way.

Finally got round to it. Yes, that’s a much better way to get people into the game. Very good idea to have got that added before Christmas, so new owners will be given a smooth ride.

Sea of Thieves' PvP-focussed Arena mode getting major overhaul next month

Plus this weekend's birthday celebrations detailed.

The big news from Rare's latest developer video update undoubtedly comes in the form of April's significant Arena mode overhaul, said to mark the start of its "next chapter".

As of April's update, all treasure maps (and all but on cashing-in ship) will be removed from the Arena, with every player now being directed toward a single buried treasure highlighted by a large glowing beacon. Matches will be shorter, reduced from 24 minutes to 15 minutes, arenas will be smaller, and silver rewards for ship-to-ship battling will rise.

Rare says these changes are designed to encourage "condensed, fluid gameplay", with the aim presumably being to funnel all participants together for massive inter-team pile-ons of ceaseless cannon fire and onboard battling.

Based on these early details, it sounds like Arena mode will lose a lot of its more nuanced strategy - the original version permits a surprisingly wide variety of offensive and defensive playstyles in the quest to be crowned PvP champion - which will be a shame if true. Hopefully, though, the overhauled version will prove enjoyable enough to mitigate that loss.

Prior to April's update, however, there's the small matter of Sea of Thieves' second anniversary celebrations. To get the ball rolling, the game is free to download and play on Xbox One (the offer doesn't appear to apply to the PC version) from now until Monday, 23rd March.
That's followed by a special Anniversary Livestream at 5pm UK time on Friday, 20th March, and players that watch via Mixer while signed into their Sea of Thieves Xbox account will receive the Killer-Instinct-inspired Spinal Figurehead, should they have missed it first time around. Additionally, anyone that plays the game this weekend will be rewarded with a special Anniversary Eye of Reach.

Finally, Sea of Thieves will embark on a three-week-long anniversary event from 20th March, giving players the chance to experience some of the activities that featured in the game's fantastic first year of updates, including the Hungering Deep, Cursed Sails, and Forsaken Shores. Rare says players will also be able to earn some - but not all - of the previously time-limited cosmetics connected to those events.

Yeah, that's not happened to us before, and I'm unaware of it happening to others. It's pretty great, tbh.

Rare's next game is cleary hinted at in the first video.

Wish I'd had instant replay on for the first one. The view from the wheel was amazing. Once it got in the air it just spun around. Z or R twice style.

Yeah, would have been cool to see the barrel roll from on the ship.
