Gmail is at least as common for that though.

Wouldn't be a problemif they had no free tier but of course they have one to acquire.

This is true, I use their system as a backend for my domain name email address which is quite nice. Worst case I'll have to migrate that doamin out to other service if they turn crap but so far they have been decent, I guess any system that provides a way to be encrypted and secure will be used by wrong'uns as well as decent folk.

The backend idea is great. I might consider it. My host in the UK (krystal) means that captures all my mail flow and then forwards to Gmail, the host runs Spam Experts / SpamAssasin which is pretty good and I run a report once a week which emails me quarantined mail I can train and release, but it's falsely flagged a fair bit of stuff, including all of grcade host renewal reminders! (lol)

Then put Gmail on top of that and together with filter rules and labels plus their smart inboxes you get very tolerable email. Probably the best filtering in the business (Gmail) as they can apply machine learning to probably one of the biggest datasets as they get everyone's approval to scan mail for ads however you can use it as a client and take away your data that way. I've always done that, sure some things I sign up direct with my Gmail address but most of them go through my domains so I can capture them there. I do kind of miss having locally archived mail going back forever but browser is generally easier even if it can be janky as strawberry float. The ajax etc front ends can be so slow or use 1gb ram it's strawberry floating crazy. Do miss mozilla thunderbird from time to time.
