Sega has announced the launch of a Mega Drive mini during 2018. The exact name, functionality and capabilities are to be confirmed.

I'd love it if the wee machine could play actual MD cartridges! I suspect, though, that as with recent NES and SNES mini consoles, games will be pre-loaded in the device.

Edit: The cartridge port of the console doesn't appear to be large enough to support the use of MD cartridges, suggesting that the console will only run pre-loaded games as per Nintendo's mini consoles.

Sega games have been available in various "mini console" guises over the years, often through Sega's licensing agreement with AT Games. However, the quality has usually been pretty low and hardcore Sega fans have not been particularly fond of these past efforts. Hopefully the quality and presentation will take a step up with this new kit.

Finally, an official Sega retro console and their first hardware since the Dreamcast :)

(needs Robocop vs Terminator though)

Hopefully it sells well enough that they make a mini Saturn and Dreamcast, the Dreamcast is still my favourite ever console

Wonder where the idea for this came from

I thought it turned out that this wasn't an actual new piece of hardware but that Sega were simply licensing one of the shitty third party ones to sell in Japan.

I hope the marketing isn't followed as closely. It's probably already sold out  .

I haven't heard this yet, Laga? I hope not!

This was from an interview last week
"We are considering importing and selling "Sega Genesis Flashback" for overseas of MegaDrive officially certified by Sega and outsourced to each country in Taiwan. The game machine was released last year. Built in game software, it is mainly sold in North America and Europe."

I hope that isn't the case, man. The announcement by Sega barely stated any details so we'll have to wait and see.

I've already loaded most of the Mega Drive games I'm interested in into my SNES mini and that works well enough for me. If this is a really well put together proposition they I may still consider it but my MD needs are pretty well met already.

If it was an official Sega one, completely developed in-house along the lines of the SNES and NES classics, then it would be big news as the existing ones are all just licensed third party units with a reputation for poor emulation.

As mentioned above, Gemini, the mini Sega consoles produced by external partners to date have been pretty poor quality; hopefully this new kit will be made to "SNES mini" standards. We don't know too much - if any! - detail at this time as Sega has given little further insight.

Ah christ, if that's true on it being a repackaged ATgames plug and play then never mind D:

If not, hopefully emulation is solid + it has good selection of third party games (Konami pleaseee). And hell throw a few Master System games on there too.

Ah, I see. Fair enough then. :)
