Jaws does your TV have usb ports? Sometimes those give enough power for something like this, and it has the benefit of powering down the console when the TV is turned off. I use my Chromecast in one of my TVs this way.

My TV is pretty old but I think it does have a USB port. To be honest, I think I'm just looking for a reason to cancel, Winckle, so I'll do that . Not decrying the system, though, as it has plenty of cool games on it.

Yeah I'm not a fan of these mini consoles. I think it's pointless tat and an emulator suite and some retro style controllers do a better job.

I take the opposite view - for me they're a great celebration of the culture of retro gaming and I thoroughly enjoy having a row of them underneath my TV.

Absolutely love these mini consoles. I finally cracked and bought the NES one the other day, despite having many of the same games on the Switch online service (and on the Wii, come to that).

So, after prevaricating, there is no way I'm not getting the megadrive mini after all. Especially because it looks like a lot of love and care has gone into this - there's a lot of positive feedback everywhere for it so far.

And £70 seems like a bit of a bargain to play all these properly. Not sure I'll ever actually get round to playing them, though. I think I have begun hoarding games - take that, no deal Brexit!

Review embargo won't be lifted for a little while but this does seem to be getting very good reports from all the press that have had some time with it so far.

It may end up in my Christmas wish list this year!

To be honest, it's not something I need.

But I think that's why it's appealing; it's kind of a treat. Right now, that NES classic is still in it's box, but I just can't help just holding the pretty packaging, looking at the box art and chortling away with joy. Yeah, I'm worth it.

Buy a brand new game for c.£50, or pay a little bit more for a whole machine, with two controllers to play co-op or competitively, a stack of nostalgia, and the likelihood that it'll be hacked in roughly 25 minutes should you be inclined.

The hacking bit is interesting, because I haven't actually done it to any of the classic consoles (and may well never get around to it due to acute diagnosed idleness), but just the fact it's an option and seeing what other people do with it makes the whole thing more exciting.

I'd be interested to hack on some select Mega CD/32X games, just to get a more authentic experience than a PC emulator. The three button pad limits the practicality of something like SNES games though.

But hacking it is lower on my list of priorities than it was with the SNES Mini. Even with the PC Engine Mini all I would want to do is translate some of the Japanese games.

It's just USB ports for the pads on this isn't it? So it should be easy to plug other stuff in and overcome the limitations of the 3 button pad!

Yup. But by default it's the 3 buttons.

I'm planning on an 8bitDo M30 and one of the wireless adapters.

I tell you what, I absolutely love 8Bitdo.

I've already used their adapter to use the DS4 on the playstation classic. Nothing wrong with the originals, but it's a huge quality of life improvement to be able just to use the analogue stick with some games - even the terrible rainbow six game becomes a bit more playable. Not only that, but it'll let you use it to mess with the settings and change things from PAL to NTSC. So I suppose that is sort of hacking, but I don't count that.

And then there is the SN30 pro controllers - on a lot of games it's my preferred controller. Even with the Switch, I often prefer it to the official Pro controller depending on the type of game. I played Switch using it with a woman who'd never played the SNES, and she raved about the design of it. It's always been a proper classic design, faithfully done and updated here, and particularly for people without massive Xbox hands.

I got the SF30 Pro for Christmas and it's my default controller for everything now. It's fantastic. Just a shame you can't get that one anymore and have to get the SN30, which has a slightly less SNES look to it.

Didn't realise they'd stopped doing those, though you can still get them on amazon, having looked just now.

It's really not often you can say a third party pad is at least as good as, if not sometimes better than, the official pads.

In fact, when playing with friends, a key part of gaming was always a race to see who could avoid the unofficial pad, and would then spend the entire time complaining about it and blaming it for every defeat. Unless it had a turbo button
