For the 32X, Space Harrier, After Burner Complete, Virtua Racing Deluxe, Star Wars Arcade, Virtua Fighter and Shadow Squadron are all excellent, whilst Mortal Kombat II and NBA Jam TE run great on the system. Doom is pretty decent and Knuckles Chaotix is, uhm, a curio!

Chaotix is a monster that deserves to be forgotten!

Doom was good by the standards of console conversions at the time and is a fun thing to have a bash on but even against a weedy PC in '93/94 it was still a hilarious comparison.

I recall their being a decent version of Virtua Fighter.

Completely pointless as it took attention away from the Saturn release (which was huge in Japan)

It was a better version than the 3DO.

But yeah I think it was based on the Jag version, which had reduced level detail and lighting complexity.

Yeah I think it was based on the Jag version (I think most of the ports used that as a base) although curiously I think it may have released before it?

The 3DO port was the one that was hastily put together by one developer in about two months wasn't it? Yeah not great! The Saturn version is poor as well because Carmack wasn't happy with the developer using their own engine and so the framerate tanked when they switched back.

The 3DO version is legendarily gooseberry fool. You're right in that the woman who ported it only had two months and it was all she could do to get it out and simply running. She'd done the Wolfenstein port prior to that and it's one of the best ports I've seen. 60fps, smooth as hell, plays nice and looks great.

I was listening to a podcast (Retrohour I think) where they had the guy who did the Saturn port and he had it running, using the hardware acceleration built in, at 60fps, but id said no. He later asked John Romero about it at a conference as he was the guy who gave the green light to all the ports. Apparently he'd been on holiday that week and Carmack had been the one to turn it down because he hated the texture warping that the hardware acceleration resulted in. Romero said he absolutely would have ok'd it as it would have played far better.

I think Carmack quite recently said that in retrospect he should have given it the greenlight.

For fans of Doom, Digital Foundry's analysis of the console ports is well worth a look. I plan on watching it (again) later!

Yeah that DF video on Doom was a nice watch. Stop Skeletons From Fighting have done a couple of fun videos on Doom ports as well:

I won't have a bad word said about my 32X doom :capnscotty:

It was my first experience of the game and I played it so much.

The only 32X games I ever owned were Doom and Virtua Racing Deluxe which I got for christmas, the 32X broke a few weeks later and the replacement one broke a few weeks after that and couldn't be replaced as the shop it came from had gone into administration/liquidation.

Didn't play Doom very much as it gave me motion sickness (nearly all FPSs do) but my dad loved it, I suspect he secretly bought it for himself rather than me as he used to play the PC version at work whilst on-call.

Loved Virtua Racing though.

There is probably zero chance of it happening over here but this would take me from 'not really interested' to 'gotta buy it now'.

I only just realised that the console won't come with a power adapter; just a usb cable. I don't have any usb power plugs and - having kinda been looking for one! - this could be the reason I need to cancel my pre-order  .

There’s an extra 99p for delivery on that.

Broom it.

Mega Drive Mini tax :( .

I do like the look of the console but I just don't think I'll play it. If cash money were flowing I'd get it but, at the moment, I can't justify it. I bought two of the Retrobit original MD controllers released a few weeks back and I haven't even used them as I don't have space to setup my MD stuff.

Gonna cancel it and try to avoid the hype around launch. But, hey, it is neat and I hope you guys enjoy it!

Haha, yeah, it was KK's post that alerted me to the cable / power issue!
