PostSelling Old Tech - Advice Please!

Quick question - what method do people usually use to go about cashing in on their old technology?

I've never bothered with trying to shift old stuff before and have usually just either continued to use older tech myself or donated it to friends/family. But I've realised I've got a few old things like phones, tablets and PC parts (old GPU etc.) that I can't see me giving away to anyone and so I'd rather just sell them off. I can't be dealing with eBay because it's a pile of gooseberry fool so figured something like CeX might be an easier option?

Can you just rock up with the stuff you want to get rid of and dump it on them? Presumably they have to put things through a testing cycle before they pay out?

I'm not really that bothered about maximising the amount of cash I get for anything, I just want to get it shifted with as little pain as possible!

P.S. This is legit, I've not stolen a bunch of stuff that I'm trying to fence or anything! :shifty:

I've used CEX in the past to offload some consoles, games, phones etc. They do put them through a test, so you'll have to find something to do for an hour or so. Also you'd better not be precious about the condition you've kept them in, because they don't give a strawberry float. My old stuff that was pristine in the box, they just rip the boxes up in front of you and stick the stuff on the floor :x

One trip I made something like £500 from a load of stuff, it was pretty good.

Edit: they're also aggressively pedantic about what should be with something before they'll accept it. They wouldn't take my ps4 because I didn't bring an hdmi cable with it.

"It needs to have one so we can't accept this"

"Can't you just deduct the cost of one?"

"NO!"

"Okay, how much is it to buy one from you?"

"£3.99"

"Pretend I've bought one from your stock then and take £3.99 out of the total"

"Ok, here's your money"

That is a bit pedantic! What are they like about having things in original boxes? What I'm looking to get rid of is a mix of boxed and unboxed

They don't give a gooseberry fool about boxes. The first thing they do is rip it up and bin it in front of you (they did this with my Logitech wheel and ps4). You can bring it in in a sainsbos bag and they won't care.

Used Cash Converters in the past for various things (such as a Black and Decker Drill). Needed to show ID or a passport, which they keep on file. Once you've been in one there's this strange urge to then pop into a 'Spoons at 10am and blow all your earnings on 1 solitary pint. You then sit and stare out the window and realise you've achieved nothing. An old bloke then waddles over and asks for a fag. You don't smoke. He then attacks you and glasses you in the face.

Alternatively there's the Music Magpie website.

Wow, sounds like the Cash Converters lifestyle is a wild ride!

I had a look at Music Magpie, how do you send stuff to them? Do you just have to parcel it up and sent it yourself or do they have a collection service of anything like that?

In that case CEX probably isn't for you

We sold a massive amount of dad's old cds and dvds through music magpie. You use an app on your phone to scan the barcode and build your order up and then it'll email you a label to print. You stick this to the box and take it to a local shop that does pickup (I think its hermes they use). Don't do what we did and have 8 large boxes on the one order, as the driver wouldn't then take them. It would have been 8 boxes with one barcode between them, so they'd have all gone missing. We had to take them back home, ditch the labels, then do each box as a separate one, so 8 different orders. A mild inconvenience, but they sent the cash thoguh to my bank pretty quickly. The app gives a live price which is then guaranteed for something like a week.

You print off a label and attach it to your own envelope, box etc. They offer a free courier collection or drop-off at checkout using Hermes. Alternatively you can use Royal Mail and the Post Office (my preference).

You can check what prices you'll get for stuff on the CeX website (webuy.com) before you go, to make sure it's worth your while. If whatever you search for has A, B and C grades listed, then A is essentially as new/sealed, B is good condition (boxes will help with that) and C is anything that's got marks, isn't in the best condition. Consoles have different prices for boxed/unboxed.

I believe they now have a system where you can book in the testing ahead of going in to store, to make things easier (obviously you still have to wait for it to be tested once you take it in).

Thanks for the info guys, very useful! I'll see what prices I get for things by checking online at CeX and Magpie and then take it from there.

They can sometimes be weirdly funny about what they can and can't take. They refused to take a Galaxy S4 Mini because it had a miniscule crack near the button. They said they couldn't guarantee it for two years so they couldn't take it. Ditto an old 360 because they said the PSU brick was too risky to guarantee.

Also, ask to see the prices before you agree to sell them the stuff because a lot of stuff is valued at 0.00 trade in price. Like strawberry float am I donating items to a strawberry floating pawn shop, I take all that stuff to a charity shop.

If it's worth anything then CEX.

If it's pretty much worthless then the bin.

Just remember that these online companies like music magpie can often offer you less once they receive the item where as if you go to a CeX store then you are getting the money there and then, if it’s a games console then just make sure you update it before taking it otherwise you will have to wait for them to update it

On top of what everyone else has said, also bear in mind you'll need an official charger cable with all phones/tablets etc. They won't take it without a charger and they won't accept 3rd party.

Even if the device didnt come with a charger it needs to have one. Traded in a 3DS once and it never came with a charger but they insisted on me supplying one before they would take it.

Interesting note regarding chargers, that might rule out a couple of the devices I want to get rid of!

Follow up question on this:

Do CeX take phones that are locked to a specific network or are they only interested in unlocked stuff?

Not sure, but the EU made it so carriers have to allow to unlock. iPhones unlock automatically after 6 months of ownership, Pixels are never locked, and if you are out of contract you should be able to contact your network and get the unlock codes.

Good point, I haven't actually checked the status of any of the phones yet so it may be that some of them are not actually locked any more.
