The tech sure is impressive, and I'm sure we'll end up with a game that's dripping in detail and atmosphere, but it would have been nice to see or hear more about how the game's going to play. The trailers show you seemingly leading a band of warriors, so it'd be good to know if this game will feature more combat than the last, and how that's changed, and whether you'll take on a commanding role, or will you just be participating amongst other AI. Will there be more than just rune puzzles? Will this game have a VR mode like the first, a different VR implementation, or given that game pass doesn't seem to support VR at all, will it be absent?

They jumping over to Unreal 5 so I think it's a way off (rumours of a gameplay trailer at game awards though).

Looks strawberry floating amazing, plug that gooseberry fool straight into my veins. Hoping you're not constantly surrounded by a party of others, the way the first game captured that sense of isolation really was something else.

Most of these more "cinematic games" these days seem to regularly involve heavily scripted and directed sequences like this - it's not really my thing but there's no denying it can enable some very impressive looking scenes.

Senua's Saga: Hellblade II Gameplay Reveals Character by Ziva Dynamics

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Dec. 09, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Unveiled on stage at the 2021 Game Awards, the Senua's Saga: Hellblade II gameplay-reveal features shots of Senua, Hellblade's main protagonist, fighting a giant troll that emerges from the water. To bring this critical scene to life, Ninja Theory, a part of XBOX Game Studios, turned to Ziva Dynamics for the most high-performance, real-time character.

The larger-than-life troll is over 40ft tall, missing a leg, and has large flaps of skin and fat hanging from its chest and gut. According to the Ninja Theory team, this complicated asset needed to hit the highest fidelity possible, in real-time, as its massive size would magnify the details of the body and exist as a benchmark for the character quality to be expected in the full title release. To achieve such results, Ziva Dynamics would leverage a combination of their soft tissue simulation tools and advanced realtime technology.

"This deadline for the troll was really right," exclaimed Simon Clutterbuck, VP of Creative at Ziva Dynamics. "We had 3 artists working on it and only one month to get it all done. Building out a realistic body utilizing our existing datasets as a starting point saved us a lot of time. The tech is really changing the way our partners tackle character work."

The Ziva Dynamics artists began by building the troll in Ziva VFX, the soft tissue simulation software. This process was expedited by a combination of Ziva's Anatomy Transfer tools and their proprietary generic male anatomy simulation. Ziva then added the troll's torn, hanging skin flaps to the simulation as a coupled skin pass. At this point, the asset was complete with excitable muscles, jiggling fat, and wrinkling skin, all while being over 40ft tall in world-space so accurate gravity would influence on all of those anatomy layers.

The tradeoff for the gigantic film-quality results, however, was a render speed of 6 hours per 50 frames, leading to hundreds of hours of baking on a 15 machine AWS cluster. So, to transform this large film asset into a real-time game character, Ziva fed over 12GB of performance capture data along with the high-quality Ziva VFX simulation into their Ziva Real-Time Trainer. This technology used machine learning to train the troll asset to perform all of the animations along with novel poses in real-time while maintaining the rich dynamics of the original simulation. As a result, the final ML troll body performed at a fully-interactive frame rate of under 3 milliseconds per frame in Unreal Engine 4.26 and was ready to be handed back to the innovation-loving Ninja Theory team.

"By utilizing their latest runtime technology Ziva helped Ninja Theory bring the full fleshy horror of the Troll to life in a way conventional workflows just can't do." says Andrew Vidler, Technical Director at Ninja Theory. Since its inception, Ninja Theory has been devoted to pushing the envelope for interactive digital content. They have continued to work with new, paradigm-shifting technology teams to uncover and create the bleeding-edge of gameplay experiences, and the partnership between Ziva Dynamics and Ninja Theory is set to generate even more best-in-class character results into 2022.

Don't get me wrong, it looks amazing. But there doesn't seem to be a lot of interaction there. Hoping there's more to do than push your thumbstick up and watch the screen.

No screen UI was a bit odd but I think this was a pitch for that section and they'll elaborate more gameplay around it (hopefully). I do hate how Xbox fans are lauding this as the second coming though on twitter, I mean it looks good yes but as you say, if the gameplay isn't there, it's pointless. No year even announced means its EONS away too.

In an interview with NME, Antoniades said that the team’s ambition has taken the form of an all-encompassing approach to the idea of “capturing reality.”

“The goal with Hellblade 2 isn’t to perfect it, but to create an experience that feels more believable and more refined. Its ambition in terms of scale is bigger. I think Hellblade 2 will make Hellblade look like an indie game,” said Antoniades.

Over 40 locations in Iceland were scouted and narrowed down before being scanned into Hellblade 2‘s engine. Real costumes were also created and scanned in, and Melina Juergens – who plays the titular Senua – was trained by a combat expert to perform the in-engine combat herself.

“The idea is believability – making things look real or believable – and the best way to do that is to base everything on real things,” added Antoniades.

Ah yes, hijacking a hashtag designed to highlight the devastating impact of climate change, to show off some fancy graphics. Very normal.

We're pushing the boundaries of realtime facial animation in Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, as showcased at GDC 2023 with Unreal Engine.

Live demo of the tech starts after 52mins - https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1772459755

If the live demo was genuinely doing the processing in such a short time, and just capturing from a phone, that’s pretty incredible. Had to laugh when I saw one of the comments in the stream: “Kinda meh”.

I just wish that this actor in particular would tone down the teeth acting. She doesn’t need to be quite so over-expressive. It was distractingly unsubtle in the first game.

Looks incredible. But was getting a healthy dose of uncanny valley there. Especially around the mouth, almost a little unpleasant.

The main thing is to see it in game and if it's even half as good as that it will be phenomenal. It's been 6 years so it really would be nice to see the game being played. I love Ninja Theory but they make Nintendo look speedy. Hopefully the wait isn't too much longer as this might be the game that makes me find a way to get Gamespass
