Why do people keep suggesting straight sequels that weren't "drastically different" as the thread title is asking!?

Think I have fonder memories of Tekken 2 than I do of the far better Tekken 3.

Sticking with Namco, Ridge Racer Type 4 is infinitely better (and different) than either the first two RR games. Rage Racer was great too.

Just to clear some things up. When I say sequel, I usually mean something numbered, or at least pretending to be more of the same kind of game. e.g. OR's example of Rayman and Rayman 2, or Paper Mario 2 (TTYD), to Super, to the rest, or Luigi's Mansion 1 to 2. So games that seem to be intended to be part of the mainline series, not a spin-off. Though I see some people saying Metroid Prime, which wasn't really what I had in mind cause like, Prime is a series of its own. Kinda like how you'd separate 3D Marios as 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, Galaxy 2 (well I guess I just shot myself in the foot here), and Odyssey, and then 2D Marios as 1, 2, 3, World, NSMB, etc. (though I guess NSMB kinda has its own set of 'numbered' sequels too).

I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Titanfall 2 actually had a (great) campaign? Does that count?

(I know it doesn't really)

Some good shouts in this thread though, for quite a specific remit!

Oh wait, was Witcher 3 drastically different from 2, which was more linear? (Not played either...)

Shining in the Darkness  Shining Force

The first game is generally well-regarded but I don't think anyone thinks "dungeon crawler" when they hear the name Shining instead of "strategy RPG".

Also, inspired by my avatar:

Wonder Boy  Wonder Boy in Monster Land

First game was an arcade side-scroller, the second game introduced a lot of the adventure / RPG elements that the series is known for.

iirc T3 was a bigger change right? Like it was the first one to introduce a universal sidestep and was generally more acclaimed critically than T2

I could be wrong tho since T3 is the furthest back I've gone in this franchise.
