Does it still handle like the originals? I‘ve still never played them properly, but I did spend hours on the enormous Shenmue 2 demo that came with Official Xbox Magazine.

I’m just wondering how familiar I need to be with the storyline of the first two to enjoy these, though I think they’re on Xbox Game Pass.

There is a movie recap option for the story so far in Shenmue 3's main menu. Just started the first game, 3 is installed and as much as I'm itching to start it I want to run through the first 2 games.

From what I've seen of my partners playthroughs yes it does, it's remarkably faithful while still being smoother and generally better executed than an old retro game can be. Also I think you can run faster.

Ryo runs at the same speed as he did in the first two games. Started fishing now too, but have yet to catch that damn white catfish.

Shenmue 2 was my favourite game of all time back when it was released and this game perfectly captures the same feelings that did... and I’m bored of it, very very bored of it... not giving up though, not far into it yet but I know it’s one of those games I will start loving if only I could find proper time to play it

Is there a thread for Shenmue 1 and 2? Itching to start 3 but I really want to do the series justice and work my way through all games so started the first game on Steam/PC. My god, that nostalgic feeling playing it

Roughly around 10+ hours in and at the harbour about to look for work. Gotta fund that cruise.

Also using SpecialK with a bunch of mods so at least his jacket doesn't look low-res as strawberry float :slol:

Finished it tonight. Gonna need some time to process it but all I'm going to say is the ending was lacklustre and failed to achieve the feeling it was going for.

I’ve been playing this for a while and it took me a while to sink in with it. And it feels weird to play as it’s been a long time to wait for it.

Now, I can say it’s lovely feeling and it’s so Shenmue. There are so many things I could do, but I think I’ll focus on the story first with some side quests while I can.

It looks beautiful for its budget, don’t get me wrong it’s not like the level of God of War or anything else but it is rather beautiful for this kind of game.

I decided to play all three games back to back. I'm currently on the original and it surprises me how much I still love this game after almost two decades. I get that people have problems with the game world, the pacing, the voice acting. But these aren't an issue for me. I love the atmosphere, the town, just chilling in Yokosuka. It's still gets a solid 9/10

I'm taking my time with it before moving onto the second one.

Interested to hear how you find playing them back to back. I'm going to get 3 next year and in two minds about playing through 1 and 2 beforehand.

That's currently what I'm doing. Finished the 1st game and just reached Kowloon in 2. Once that's finished I can move onto the 3rd game. So far I've enjoyed and loved my time with Ryo as much as I did back in the Dreamcast days

I'll keep you posted. I have been taking my time with it but I'm off on Xmas break from university so hoping to bet through a lot more.

Initial thoughts are that for me it generally holds up. My main issue is that Ryo controls like a tank. I'm ok with the waiting around and just wandering around Yokosuka. The voice acting doesn't bother me, I am playing it with the Japanese dub though, purely because I've played it multiple times in the past with the Englsih dub.

When I get further on I'll let you know if my opinions have changed.

Combined total of 63 hours with Shenmue 1 and 2 on PC. At the last section of 2 and its strawberry floating crashed twice now in different parts and the last section with Shenhua you can't even strawberry floating save the game. 3rd time doing that bastard run through the forest up the mountain to the cave :capnscotty:

I have decided to start it afresh and I am really enjoying it more this time now. I have reached the next village (Niaowu) which I am further than where I was before. I think I was distracted with other games during that period like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Luigi's Mansion 3 and Pokémon Shield, so now I can focus on this alone.

It is a slow pace game, but it helps me relaxing and enjoying while I am playing.

Shenmue.

Yeah, i'd like to see Shenmue 4 too, especially after the enjoyable final confrontation.
