I played Shenmue (HD) for the first time this year, and absolutely loved it! Really need to play 2, so I'm ready for 3!

I think if I can push through the interminable waiting that game forces on you, then I'll be fine with the 2nd when I get to it.

I remember when it first came out being blown away by the attention to detail in the game and all the things you can interact with. But I very quickly got to the point where I realised most of the things you can do had little point beyond trying to make the waiting less mind numbing. Few of them were worth doing for their own sake.

It's probably been the biggest barrier to me getting into the games till now.

So while I recognise the importance, ambition and scope of the game, for me it was one of the first big examples of a title implementing all these systems that were impressive, but did little to make the actual game more fun to play.

I can understand that. I loved the world that had been created, and the waiting just didn't bother me for some reason. I don't know why.

It's frustrating, because simply being able to speed up time, or skip to a specific time would alleviate the biggest issue I have with it.

I literally sat for 20 minutes at one point yesterday, doing crosswords, waiting for it to hit the time I needed it to, before getting three minutes of gameplay and a "Come back tomorrow". It's not good.

Still, persevering as the time skip in the 2nd game should make it a bit more enjoyable. :D

I had the same issue both when I played it on original release, and playing the HD version at the beginning of the year. I suppose you could kill time on the arcade, but then I'd spent all my cash on those sonic toys, so like CD, all I could do was put the controller down and read for a bit. In fact in one session while.walking around to kill time I fell asleep  I woke up with Ryu just facing some random shop.front.

They were trying to make a more immersive, realistic world and really over did it. Thankfully it was fixed for the second.

The waiting is less of an issue than the controls for me which are inexplicably trash.

Used to class Shenmue 2 as my favourite game of all time back 15 or so years ago but having bought the HD collection on launch day and seeing how badly the first game has aged after playing for 30 minutes I’ve not touched either since... not that I need to as remember the games so well, the whole experience was magical at the time, especially disc 4 of Shenmue 2.

So worried I’m gonna hate playing Shenmue 3 but I know I have to buy and play it... it’s strawberry floating Shenmue

This insta-fail "find the warehouse" stealth section can go take a rusty strawberry float to itself.

Maybe he got a pocket guide that he revised on the boat over.

Knowing Ryo he would trade it for magic beans. That's classic Ryo.

He must have found some sailors on the boat.

Well that's Shenmue done and out of the way.

Story is frankly the only thing that was particularly interesting.

None of the gameplay was that enjoyable, or that well implemented but I'll give it a pass as mostly being "of it's time" and not aging that well.

But the waiting.....

Even on it's first release it was shite and it's twice as shite now. Thankfully it becomes less frequent later on, but it's horrendous.

I'm hoping the second game is a bit more enjoyable to be honest as the story is only enough to keep me going for so long.

I think the game was as previously mentioned supposed to create an immersion. It seemed like you forced yourself to play the game since its older mechanics annoyed you, so there's no wonder why you weren't into it. For those that were immersed into it, it really is something else.

Regarding the waiting, shenmue 2 fixes that by letting you skip to a certain time.

I do get way some people aren't keen (the English dub, the waiting around, the tank controls) but for me it's a game that feels just as entertaining as the first time I played it. The waiting around doesn't bother me, I'm happy to walk around Yokosuka, I never feel bored. The only thing I'm not keen on is the tank controls
