I just watched it, and although I largely liked it, I thought Murdoch's cockiness was mis-placed. I mean, the reasoning didn't exactly stack up.

'Here I am, flicking you in the eye, deliberately trying to piss you off and get a rise out of you, and I've demonstrated to you that the only power I have over you is entirely in my head with no backup and if you were so much as to get a lucky smack in and incapacitate me (y'know, that thing you already demonstrated you can do very easily this season) you could snap my neck and I'd be removed. REMOVED I TELLS YA. Now hold still and let me flick you in the eye again'.

Not the solidest ground to be making threats from.

I think they covered that when Sherlock shot him in the head

Loved that episode, not a massive fan of what Sherlock did at the end but it was surprising to say the least.

The mystery side of it was a bit weak again with there being no actual vault. With no evidence, I don't see anyone being able to have that kind of hold over people.

It was very enjoyable to watch though if you suspended belief enough. I hated Magnussen by the end, such a great vile character.

He was a right slimy bastard. The actor who played him is the brother of Mads Mikkelsen(Le Chiffre from Casino Royale amongst other awesome roles).

Quite right too, he's class in it.

I thought Lars Mikkelsen was wicked in Sherlock too. Shame he died, but I personally thought it made perfect logical sense for Sherlock to do what he did, given the circumstances. One of the only in character moments of the whole season...!

I finally decided to give this a try and I liked the first episode (even if the killer was so obvious I'm not sure if it was supposed to be a mystery). It's the only thing I've seen Cumberbatch in where I've actually liked his performance.
The Moriarty/Mycroft switcharoo was really well done, just a shame it was the biggest mystery of the episode as the killer's actual method turned out to be a bit gooseberry fool

Has anyone watched the unaired pilot? If so is it worth bothering with?

I have. I enjoyed it, it was interesting to see how the programme changed from the original pilot. The story is pretty much identical if I remember correctly, so unless you're a fan of the series then it probably won't be worth you bothering with.

Shocking as it may be, considering their relative positions in the pop culture zeitgeist, Elementary is a fundamentally better series, with a richer supporting cast, a more consistently rewarding structure, and a far more compelling perspective on its protagonist.

Elementary has some really gooseberry fool mysteries for the first 10 or so episodes (I think that's when I stopped watching) and the pilot's crap so I never managed to pick it up again.

The only really strong point the article makes is about Moriarty which Elementary does do very well but the rest of it boils down to the writer liking the america television show structure over the british one

Elementary does a lot of things better than Sherlock, but it's hurt by having to churn out 24 episodes a year. This naturally leads to a lot of filler episodes, which has been more prevalent this year with certain threads from the season already tied up and taking up less screen time.

Sherlock could probably do with being 6 episodes long rather than 3, this past one kinda showed a need for it to develop the plot line and big bad a tiny bit more...

I've seen bits of Elementary... Can't say it's lured me in particularly well...

I'd love 6 x 1 hour episodes, with the last 2 being a double-header or something.

Would really allow them to do so much more with the character and source material. Plus then we could accept an episode or two of pure character development.

With the two stars of the show being in a big demand for Hollywood films, we'll be lucky to see 6 episodes at this rate.

Wouldn't be surprised if Freeman ends up doing a US TV show run.

Watched the pilot (well 3/4 of the pilot) of elementary last night. :dread:
