Was going to hit up the Wii U version but I think i'll hold off until the PS4 version arrives.....cross buy/cross save between PS4 and Vita is too good to pass

I'd go for the Wii U if I didn't have a PC because I prefer playing games on bigger screens.

I'd go for the U version because the 3DS controls are quite fiddly, and the 3D effect isn't very noticeable or any particular extra use.

For the record (and I know I am in the minority) I didn't like this game (and I love retro stuff). I found the spade jumping mechanic a faff and it's almost constantly required to progress levels. Maybe it was just the tiny and fiddly 3DS pad and controller that didn't help.

It was a challenging game in some places too - so if you can't handle old fashioned difficulty levels you might be better to try something else.

I think I'm gonna follow your advice, Starquake, and avoid this title. I suspect that the game will be a bit too challenging for me.

I must be getting old, as I increasingly prefer just to explore environments and play at my own pace rather than race against timers and wade through linear missions.

Its not that challenging Jawa as its got very forgiving mid level save points. There's no timers so you're never in a rush.
It's a lovely game and much worthy of your money than watchdogs!

New Game Plus is kinda hard, it reduces the checkpoints in the level and replaces the health items with bombs.

The first play through wasn't that bad, only the final boss gave me trouble. I kept dying in the most stupid ways. Based on the first play through, this game is nowhere near as difficult as some of the NES games it is trying to channel.

Shovel Knight is only as difficult as you want it to be with its terrific risk/reward checkpoint system. And there's always a checkpoint right before the boss rooms so you can just keep plugging away at it if you're having trouble.

Shovel Knight is on sale again Rog. Sadly I don't really have the money to throw down on it, but I can wait until next sale :>

I'm confused, is that saying that they are releasing Shovel Knight across multiple platforms for nothing at all.

oh right my bad, i thought that was bloody generous. I think i was a bit confused as shovel knight isn't out yet for Vita so it was sounding like they were releasing it for free on vita,ps3,ps4.

I only learnt about Shovel Knight late last year. Just a little reminder that the PlayStation version is coming out tomorrow. Whilst I think too many 'retro' games are style over substance, reviews suggest this has quality gameplay Also, some of the in-game tunes I listened to are really good. Taps into long-suppressed nostalgia veins:

Awesome. Hope it does well (although I can't really see it).

What's the extra content in the PS4/Xbone versions? Worth picking up if I've already 100%ed the WiiU version?

I think Xbox One version has some battletoads shite in it.

EDIT: The battletoads stage is supposed to be aces, im highly tempted to purchase...
