Do you really think that getting sports and the latest movies for free could be legal? Selling the boxes is legal, but how they can be used is a different matter....

Yes, I didn't think the content was free but the boxes are legal - just the possibilities are somewhat dubious :shifty:

Does anyone know what (if any) steps the rights holders can take against this streaming?

Back on topic - i'd recently renegotiated our Sky sub with the intention of leaving for NowTV. I ditched documentaries, music, kids and HD (think this is now branded as a new bundle called 'Original' I think) this would of been £20 but the sky operator knocked another £10 off for 10 months so a tenner a month seemed ok for me given the ability to record/pause/rewind with the sky box.

Exactly the same as me (sort of) - I dropped F1 and box sets (which I'd assumed were free anyway as I never asked for them but had them included :x ) and then got a 35% discount taking my monthly fee from £43 to £21. Although I've bought a 4 month NowTV movie pack so I guess it is a kind of Win-Win for me and Sky.

Recombu wrote:Virgin TV customers will feel the burn this summer as Sky Sports and Sky Movies monthly fees are set to creep up by £2.50 and £1 respectively.

As with the incoming rises due to hit Sky TV subscribers pockets, existing punters can expect to start paying the new prices from June 1 onwards; new customers yet to sign up for Virgin Media will have to start paying the new rates from this Friday April 29 onwards.

A Virgin Media spokesperson has supplied Recombu with the full list of price changes, adding: “Virgin Media confirms that from 1 June 2016, it is increasing the cost of Sky Sports and Sky Movies on its TV service, and it is currently writing to customers to inform them of the changes.

increased the costs for Sky Sports and Sky Movies for its customers and for Virgin Media this means having to reflect these increases to our customers.”

Taking all seven Sky Sports channels normally costs £29.25/month on top of a Virgin TV subscription, which start at £20/month for TV on its own or £10 (plus £17.99 line rental) for a Virgin TV and landline deal. The basic price for Sky Sports will go up to £31.75/month.

Additionally, Sky Movies currently costs £20/month for access to all 11 Sky Movies channels - this will be going up to £21/month later this year.

Customers who take both sets of premium channels will however only pay an additional £2.50 on top of their regular TV package.

Similarly, Virgin Media bundles like the Big Kahuna Sports and Big Kahuna Movies (including Virgin Media’s top tier 200Mbps broadband and over 230 TV channels) will see respective increases of £2.50 and £1 kicking in, but those with the Big Kahuna Sports & Movies deal will pay an extra £2.50/month instead of £3.50.

The standard price of Virgin Media's VIP bundle (200Mbps broadband, all TV channels in HD where available and unlimited landline calls) will not go up.

Isn't pretty much all the good sport over the next 3 months on terrestrial anyway? Coupled with the lovely weather (hopefully), why bleedin' bother.

So 2 months ago after the half price deal we were on expired, we cancelled the sports, movies and HD packs and went back to just the basic package. So we now pay €30 a month but we, somehow, are still getting sports, movies and HD! Its a bit of a result really.

Telewest made that mistake with me in the 90s - we ended up getting Sky Movies for ages until they finally realised they'd forgotten to turn it off.

I tried to get a better deal out of Sky for my broadband this week. Best they'd offer me was £10 for Unlimited Fibre. They couldn't match anything BT was offering in regards to cashback (currently a quite incredible £235), speed (52 vs 39), a better router or even the option of paying the line-rental in 1 go. BT have totally obliterated them at the moment.

And completing the sweep of price increases is now BT...

BT is raising prices in July - The hikes are far higher than inflation, and come earlier than expected.

If you enjoy BT's phone, broadband or TV services, you can expect those packages to get a little more expensive in the coming months. The provider has announced a series of inflation-busting price increases, which will its see standard broadband rise from £13 to £15 and its superfast fibre connections go up by an average of £2.05 from July 3rd. However, BT says it has boosted download allowances by 20 percent to make up for it.

  • From July, monthly line rental direct debits will rise one pound from £17.99 to £18.99 (a 5.5 percent increase), although the Basic £5 rental package for low-income households will stay the same.
  • Line rental saver, in which customers pay the line rental in one go, is rising to £205.08.
  • Call prices will increase across the board, with fixed cost landline calls rising 11.3 percent to 19 pence, UK landline and 0870 numbers jumping from 10.24p to 11p and Anytime UK Calls getting a 55 pence increase to £8.50 a month.
  • The BT Sport package will charge broadband customers £6 instead of the normal £5 from July.

At least Virgin's price increase only applies to Sky Movies and Sports, and I can believe their claim that Sky increasing their wholesale prices is the reason why.

Sky are increasing their line rental from March, though they haven't announced by how much. Usual claptrap about investment in services and being beholden to BT.

In fairness, line rental is kind of beholden to BT who currently charge £18.99/month, £1.59/month more than Sky charge at the moment.

BBC News wrote:BT announces price hikes for broadband, landline and sports

BT has announced price rises for its broadband and landline services, while television customers will start having to pay for BT Sport.

Broadband charges will typically rise by between 5% and 6% from 2 April, the company said.

From August, BT TV subscribers will pay £3.50 a month for BT Sport, which has been free for broadband customers.

Landline customers will see phone plans increase, and the cost of calls will go up by 1p a minute.

Rivals Sky, Virgin Media and TalkTalk have all announced price increases within the last year.

BT said phone rental would be frozen at £18.99, while the cost of a subscription to BT TV will also remain the same.

The company also promised to compensate customers automatically if it fails to deliver on one of its service promises. The details will be published at a future date.

Under Ofcom rules, any customer who is unhappy with the price changes on their contract has 30 days to opt out, once they have been informed of the changes by BT.

'Better package'

The company has been battling with Sky over the rights to sporting events.

The two broadcasters spent more than £5bn between them to acquire the rights to Premier League matches.

BT has also paid a reported £80m to show the 2017-18 Ashes cricket series.

BT's consumer chief executive, John Petter, said: "Customers will get a better package and improved service from us this year in exchange for paying a little more.

"Millions will have the chance to upgrade to faster broadband and almost a million will be able to upgrade to enjoy unlimited usage for no extra cost."

He said that prices for low-income customers, who use the BT Basic service, would be frozen and calls costs capped.

Mr Petter pointed out the company had also frozen line rental, which, he said, "would particularly help customers who only take a traditional phone service from BT".
