‪Sky, Virgin Media and BT all increase their prices - 2023 edition (pg1‬7)

A £4.01 monthly increase for me, or an extra £48.12 a year.

I think I’ll be dumping the TV service. It’s not worth £11.10, let alone the RRP of £22/£27. I only use it for SkyGo and Sky Sports Mix (which has been really gooseberry fool the past month).

Give BT TV a look, I’ve been well impressed with it.

How long have you been with Sky?

I mean if anyone is interested I can get you Sky TV with Sky Cinema and Netflix (Or Sky Sports instead of Cinema/Netflix) for £30/month

From April my bill will be £43.10 for Fibre Max and landline, Sky Go Extra, and the Original bundle. There's now £31.39 worth of discounts being applied according to the MySky app.

These price increases, what are they for?

Prem rights decreased from last time around. La Liga and ATP rights have been lost. Granted they gained the NBA.

I don’t see how they can justify these increases. Even Ross Kemp looks to have been binned. They don’t really have a lot of new programming.

Thousands of BT customers who watch its sports channels will be hit with price rises of up to £48 a year, starting at the end of next month.

The telecoms giant has confirmed that customers with the Classic, Essential, Entertainment, Entertainment Plus and Sport Starter deals will pay an extra £1 a month, while there is an increase of £24 a year for those with the Entertainment Starter deal. Those on its Max plan will pay a further £4 a month. All changes come into play on 28 July.

Broadband customers who watch the service via the BT Sport app alone will pay £1 a month more, taking the cost to £11 a month, or £132 a year.

After four price hikes in three years, BT announced earlier this year that it will not be increasing prices for broadband customers in 2019.

From March 2020, broadband, landline and mobile plans will increase in line with the consumer prices index (CPI) rate of inflation from January each year.

BT constantly rising their prices is getting to be frustrating. I recall them saying that the sport wouldn't lead to higher pricing for customers but it sure has. I just get the phone + broadband service as I'm not gonna pay out for the (increasingly split amongst various providers) football channels.

I have to admit that I'm always happy with the reliability of their phone and broadband services, but the cost is biting now.

Virgin Media going all out with their price hike!

Around five million Virgin Media broadband, TV and home phone customers will see price increases of up to £54/year from this autumn

Affected customers will pay the higher prices from their September or October bills onwards.

The average price increase will be 4.9%, equivalent to £3.30/month or £39.60/year – but some could see increases of up to £4.50/mth or £54/yr.

Those who signed up to an 'Oomph' broadband, TV and Sim bundle from 29 April, and those on Talk Protected plans for over-65s or those with accessibility needs, won't be affected by the increases.

Virgin Media last raised its prices in October and November of 2018, when bills went up by 4.5% – and 250,000 Virgin Mobile customers saw increases from this April as part of a tariff shake-up, with some reporting hikes of up to £150/yr.

Mine is going up £4 a month i will be speaking to them when I get back off hols and see what they can do, they did sort out a discount last year so hopefully can do something this time.

Surely these increases can't keep on happening. It must be unsustainable. The amount of people I know that just straight up stream stuff from free streaming sites is now ridiculous.

Unless you are hell bent on watching the latest shows as soon as they are broadcast, its not worth having sky or virgin. Take Game of Thrones for example, people in my office who aren't exactly tech savvy were more than happy to wait a day longer to see it for free on a streaming site.

Even if you want the latest shows and want to do it legally, NowTV is a much better option. It’s nowhere near as expensive (especially as there are usually plenty of offers around) and it is easy to cancel.

Apart from Sky+ occasionally, since leaving I've not missed it at all. There's so many deals, freebies and cheap content out there these days that being locked into a contract for TV just feels like a complete waste of money. I still have 300 odd channels on satellite for free and I don't watch even 90% of it, so the fact I'm missing the latest episode of Trucking Gone Wild or whatever on Discovery is neither here nor there.

Virgin are terrible. Sky is terrible but at least want to keep you around from what I've seen in this thread. There's really no reason for these prices to keep rising except that - very possibly - they're losing customers and wanting to stay in the money. And it's the loyal ones who also take the largest hit. And despite my dad always managing to wrangle a discount of some sort from Virgin, it always ends up not lasting as the prices always seemingly increase to beyond what we were paying before the discount. And the fact we've been loyal customers to them since the Telewest days has no effect on them whenever it gets mentioned.

Can't complain too much as the broadband is the largest percentage of that cost for us, but the customer service is pretty much a joke, failing to understand any problem you might have and offering things you just don't want to get a better deal [which usually is just a few quid off and comes with less features so why don't you just give us that few quid off!] And, as before, you try mentioning to them that giving all these new customers the great deals while screwing the loyal customers over with price rises every few months is not how loyalty should be rewarded. They just don't seem to care.

In the end, these companies can keep doing this stuff because it benefits all in the end, pretty much like car insurance. And they'll keep getting away with it because who is really going to challenge them?

The issue is actually caused by the whole “switch now” thing.
For insurance, interwebs, etc. the company is losing money year one and so year two you go to a genuine price rather than a bullshit too low get people to sign up price.

Issue is as the comparison sites push switching so much if you don’t do first year discounting you will die.

It’s bullshit but it’s what everyone does. It means that you look like you don’t give a gooseberry fool about existing etc. as the renewal price is a more realist price that means the company can actually survive.

Yet if they gave discounts to the loyal customers freely [without them needing to fish for it] such a 'switch now to keep a low price' policy would never have surfaced. I get that not everything has to be about getting something for staying with one brand, but considering this is a long-time service you're paying into and not a one and done deal, it would make sense to keep customers loyal by showing them how much you mean to them instead of driving them to fish for benefits to staying.
