Enjoy when you get a a chance to start it! How much did it set you back?

It was £42 but I had £55 credit left for them so used that to pick it up, I like to get games in physical editions where possible especially ones like this.

Get the pc version as there are so many QOL mods for it to stop the Bethesda programming standards.

Probably the Special Edition if you’re not fussed about mods? As then this new version of Skyrim will be ending mod support for that version by trying to shift everyone over to the new version. So maybe the original PC or the new version if mods are of interest to you.

They're not, but everyone raves about how they're a must

Personally, I don’t think mods are needed at all, and if that’s the case I’d go for the Special Edition (you can probably find a cheap download code somewhere I imagine) and just take advantage of the minor free bits of content coming to owners of the SE when the ‘new’ version comes out on the 11th of November.

I’d estimate about 90% of my time in Skyrim has been mod free so while a few of them are fun they’re not a must in my opinion, although I can easily see why people who’ve been playing with mods enabled for years would see it the other way around but as you’ve not used them before you won’t miss them.

Had a quick go on this earlier and yeah, it looks right up my street, looking forward to diving into at some point.

Is there a character type I should choose that’s best for a newbie or are they all pretty welcoming?

You'll become OP regardless so it doesn't really matter, but probably Imperial or Nord are the easier starting races.

Yeah you’ll definitely hit a point where nearly no enemies cause you problems anymore with the scaling the game implements. As for race I nearly always opt for Breton, passive 25% damage reduction to magic attacks is the best one overall although each have their merits. As for play style, just experiment! I recall I started it and used my first save as a way to get used to the game before starting a second save where I was more focused on the direction my character was going.

I really tried to make my last playthrough as a two handed warrior and you do genuinely have to focus on not falling back on sneaky archer! I think the game mechanics genuinely make SA just the most obvious and easiest way to get through 99% of levels, and strawberry floating hell imagine trying to do the Dark Brotherhood questline as a two handed warrior! It's also so much more organic when fighting dragons, especially in the early game. Like, what kind of madlad sees a dragon and thinks 'yea I'm gonna wait til it lands then hit it with a sword'.

The race you choose used to have far more of an effect on your game in the older elder scrolls. Back in morrowind, I chose an argonian for it's water breathing, plus beggar's nose as my skill to search out keys. Both were immensely useful in that game, but the trade off was as a beast race, argonians can't wear closed face helmets or boots. In that game there were lots of little skills onky available to certain races.

As the games went on, lots of things were taken out, to the point that in Skyrim, you can be pretty much any race as you just end up as a stealth sniper no matter what you do. I always play the argonian though, with the same name, as a tribute to my morrowind character

Reading this makes me sad. Considering I've played both Skyrim and Fallout 4 for hundreds of hours each, they really aren't a patch on what came before :simper:

Who would have thought that in a topic about Skyrim, a grumpy old man would turn up to talk about Morrowind.

;)

Don't get me started on Daggerfall.

That’s only happened most of the time to me  one run I did enjoy (and still going on Switch if I get back to it) is basically a magic wielding tank with a 2H sword as back up, all the armour reduces cost of destruction spells. Stealth archer is just so satisfying in Skyrim though.

I’ve only played Skyrim and a bit of Oblivion and even between the two you can see how things were made worse and better between the two, having to opt for an actual race for a certain class/play-style should still be in there in my opinion.

Yeah the slow erosion of any genuine role playing or consequence to your character building decisions in the Elder Scrolls games is pretty tragic to experience

I think having race specific abilities like night vision and water breathing is cool and more should be made of it, but also making white people the most charismatic is kind of dodgy

It seems unusual that - unless I've missed it! - we're ten days from release and we haven't seen the updated version; no screens or footage. And no price has been announced. I know it's being pessimistic but, if it wasn't at least a half-decent update, wouldn't they have shown it by now?
