Once you can summon a Dremora Lord it's game over.

I played through as a Battle Mage/Summoner type character and Dremora Lords were so deliciously OP.
Especially when I got the perk that let me summon two at once. Don't think I ever fought anything they couldn't beat.

The only slight downside with them is they make it quite hard to be stealthy when you have armour-clad killing machines screaming "I will feast on your soul!!!!!!!!. ARGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!"
That would certainly grab my attention if one was running at me with a strawberry floating huge sword.

It’s even more op when you can craft your own armour and get casting for at least one school of magic for free, I’ve typically gone for destruction at no cost, then I can use my magika for restoration, keep meaning to start dabbling in conjuration on that save as well.

I’m hoping the more I play the more I’ll understand what you are all on about

How do I get the Dremora Lord?

Summoning school of magic I think, although I tend to not bother with magic at all in most of my playthroughs and have never got that far!

Actually I don't think I've ever done any of the college quests in Skyrim. Are they any good?

Just out of interest, what’s the highest levelled character anyones played with been when you’ve first visited the Greybeards? Mine was on my Battlemage build (heavy armour, destruction, 2H, smithing and enchanting being the focus so far) where I was almost pushing level 60

Did the side quest for the Companions where I had to go clear out a cave, bloody hell it was tough, died so many times  I can see what you mean about using the bow tho, it seems to do a lot more damage than using the sword, I like the destructive magic though so I’m rocking flames with the Master Sword.

It's a summoning spell but it honestly kind of ruins the game as once you have that everything else is almost redundant.
You just send him in and watch him kick arse and if he dies you just summon another.
There's very few situations where that tactic doesn't work and it just takes away almost all challenge.

I would agree with that. It does make the game comically easy, especially if you can summon two at a time.

There is a weapon you get for completing a side-quest that has the spell bound to it, but you need to keep it charged to use it, so that balances out a little.

This is getting its claws into me now. I'm playing the special edition on ps4 and imo the visuals look significantly dated but I can see the epic design intent throughout and I guess this would have been hot gooseberry fool back in the day.

I've made it to the main town (Winterfell? All the locations sound the same) and joined a gang of ultimate badass warriors. The king's wizard wants me to pick up some dragonstone thing. Ok nerd, I'll do it.

I'm finding the combat very clunky. I want to be lopping of bandit heads like Aagorn but I'm finding myself hiding behind a shield, walking backwards and kiting badguys and chipping them down slowly. It's not doing my image any good.

Also I've got a follower! Some elf dude who fancied a bird in this backwards nowhere village. He looks handy with a bow and has taught me archery for free due to some weird exploit where I give him money and then open his inventory and take it back out again

I saw what I thought were mammoths(!?) In the distance but they had giants nearby so I averted.

So far so good then. I've still got mods turned off for now.

Mods are so often my downfall in this.

I spend ages installing huge lists of mods to make it look great, then I play for a couple of hours and move on to something else.

Though there was one mod I used through my whole playthrough, called Project Pew. Basically replaced all the bow and arrow sounds with someone going "pew", which always put a wee smile on my face.

It was never a "gooseberry fool hot" looking game, even back on original release people were taking the piss out of the way it looked. But it does have some fantastic environments and scope that still impress today.

Melee combat is always going to be a bit clunky, hence why so many people end up going archer or exploring the various magic options. There's still some fun to be had with swords and axes if you unlock some of the perks for them, but it's never been the most fun way to play

Now been accepted to join the companions :toot:

Still having fun with this, combat wise i've taken to using flame magic to burn everyone then when they get close whack em with my Master Sword :datass: can you have magic equipped to both hands and is that a viable way of playing?

You can get a perk which slightly powers up your magic attacks, magic is a little odd in Skyrim, in the way that it doesn’t scale the same way other attack options do, you can’t find items which add a % increase to magic attacks like you can with weapons. So it starts out feeling really powerful but can feel a bit meh towards the end, combining it with a sword is a good option really.

Ahh ok, I’ll stick with my current method then. I’m putting my skill points into one handed and destruction magic for the most part
