Why do you say that? It's probably easier dealing with this than an actual person.

I just imagine most people would answer here a computer ish voice and go 'nope spam' rather than listen to what it is saying.

I quite like the idea behind it though so hopefully I am wrong

I'd imagine the staff would be briefed about the introduction of this and other similar services for booking. Some people don't like to or can't talk on the phone so it would be pretty poor to just hang up like that and not worth the negative PR it would cause.

Depends on the company this sounds like it will just ring the normal phone number, so the restaurant or whatever not something the place has signed up to.

I imago e Google would have it depropritise on searches places that hang up on its ai so I guess that will make places cooperate.

I imagine in time it will be normal but to start with some smaller places may be very weirded out by the whole thing.

Got 2 Google home minister coming, Alexa has gotten owrse recently particicularly around Spotify due to having multiple accounts on the echo.

Basically if I swap to the wires account from her music it doesn't swap back nicely and I can't play on all devices etc. Also I found if you shuffle everything then Spotify connect to an echo or a group it reshuffles to a order where all the artists are the same letter.

So going to test out Google Home and swap if it works better

It identifies the voice and links to that account defined in the google home app so yeah it should work fine. When I had a spotify 3 month deal set up it worked no problem. Same with Google Music.

One random nice thing about the assistant. I've been playing podcasts. All of the following have worked:

"Play X podcast" - plays the podcast and resumes from where I last left off or "next episode" or "play latest episode" will skill to the next/newest one.

"Rewind 20 minutes" - actually rewinds the podcast by twenty minutes

"Rewind 20 minutes and pause" - actually rewinds the podcast by 20 minutes AND pauses it so I can catch up with the next bit when I get back from making some tea

"Resume" resume the podcast

And it picks up all the podcasts I have tried from wherever it gets them from, I don't even need to know

Also

"play radio 6" picks up BBC Radio 6 Music even though this is a UK radio station but it just guesses that

There's so much stuff I take for granted now

All the time I just say, rather than "turn it down" or "set volume to 4" I just say:

"volume 40"

It sets the volume to 40/100 which is perfect for me in pretty much every situation (the volume actually goes from 1 to 100%)

I literally made all of these up on the spot and they worked, I never even looked up how to play a podcast.

Much recommended if anyone wants natural speaking. Sure, it strawberry floats up from time to time, but it helps with your diction. Varyingly you either need to speak a lot MORE naturally or quit mumbling which is my problem not the AI!

Unplugged my Google Home so we could put our Christmas tree up and to be honest it was lucky to get plugged back in again, use it so rarely now. Having said that, I am going to make a more conscious effort to get it playing background music or to do fun quizzes with my daughter - apparently you can get it to act as quizmaster, will try that later.

Amazon devices have been actually purchased, consciously. Google Assistant is preinstalled on Christ knows how many devices. Wonder how many are actively used of the 1bn Google versus, I would guess, the majority of the 100m Alexa

We have 6 Alexa units at home dotted around the place. Love em. We all use them constantly

I often wonder if The Verge has ever tried to launch in France.

It’s all part of the war on Christmas. They will not be happy until we are all worshipping the Marxist Festivus pole. :x

It amazes me with all of the pointless Alexa/Google Assistant/HomeKit enabled appliances out there, there's not really any coffee machines. Currently use sleep cycle on my watch which detects the best time to wake (during a 30 minute period) and then also gets the bedroom lights to gradually turn on. Would be nice to be able to add brewing a fresh pot of coffee to that routine!

My mum used to have an alarm clock that also boiled water to make tea. Now that's a smart device for you, although probably not particularly safe. And that was in the early 90s.

You can get smart coffee machinew, chances are with IFTTT you can set up a routine that detects what is happening and then starting the machine up.

https://www.cnet.com/news/google-uses-h ... port-says/

A contractor provided Belgium-based VRT NWS with more than a thousand recordings of people using Google Home and the Google Assistant app to answer questions and conduct searches, the news outlet reported Thursday. There were also recordings from when the assistant was accidentally triggered.

The Google contractor says the job entails listening to the recordings to check the accuracy of the assistant listening to users speaking in Dutch. Contractors review the script of the recorded query and confirm it matches with the voice recording. There are reportedly thousands of Google employees worldwide listening to audio excerpts via a secure login in the company's Crowdsource app.

I meet a lot of tech folks due to the circles my wife moves in, specifically a lot of academics concerned with privacy and digital rights. One of the foundational principles of every one of them is "Don't let a smart speaker get anywhere near your home."

smarter.am do a coffee pot. I have their iKettle which was pretty good at first but they break down pretty quick with faults/design defects. I've gone through 3 kettle units in about 4 years. I can't speak for the coffee pot but from my experience I would imagine the same kind of thing after 12 months of use.

Teasmade. They’ve been around for a very long time.
