SNK continues the March of the Minis

The trend for mini-versions of vintage gaming machines continues. This time around SNK wants in on the action with the upcoming official Neo Geo Mini. The new mini console is one of the first we have seen with a built-in display. It mimics the SNK Neo Geo MVS (Multi Video System) cartridge-based arcade cabinet system which was launched back in 1990.

The Neo Geo Mini will be mini indeed — the console includes a 3.5-inch display and “fits perfectly in the palm of one’s hand,” according to SNK’s announcement. The console’s official dimensions are 135 mm wide by 108 mm deep by 162 mm tall, and it weighs 600 grams. That works out to roughly 5.25 inches by 4.25 inches by 6.25 inches, and 1.3 pounds.

Last and probably least, the Neo Geo Mini will be produced in a domestic version for Japan and an International version for other territories. These are styled a little different, especially the built-in control pads, and are likely to default to Japanese and English language UI/games settings respectively.

The controls seem way too small to be comfortable for any decent length of time and it's a shame they've gone for the dull colours on the International Model. Even though I wouldn't be a huge SNK fan I still sorta want one though. There doesn't seem to be any controller images yet, hopefully they use a standard USB connection.

Would have preferred a mini AES to be honest. I can't imagine that mini arcade being good to play on at all.

Am I right in thinking you can hook it up to your tv?

First thought: That's super neat

Second thought: Why do we get the boring colours version :(

That looks very uncomfortable to use.

If they want to make it a true Neo Geo then they need to make each game cost £2,499.99.

That looks really cheap and nasty.

It kind of reminds me of back in the 80's when we had little space and frogger looking arcade machine table top things

A video explaining it a little and my thoughts on it, as someone who has owned both an AES and MVS at diffrent points in time.

The games included in the Neo Geo Mini International are:

Ghost Pilots
King of the Monsters
King of the Monsters 2
Kizuna Encounter: Super Tag Battle
Last Resort
Magician Lord
Metal Slug
Metal Slug 2
Metal Slug 3
Metal Slug 4
Metal Slug 5
Metal Slug X
Mutation Nation
Ninja Master’s: Haou Ninpou Chou
Puzzled
Real Bout: Fatal Fury
Robo Army
Samurai Shodown II
Samurai Shodown IV: Amakusa’s Revenge
Samurai Shodown V Special

Shock Troopers
Shock Troopers: 2nd Squad
Super Sidekicks

The King of Fighters ’97
The King of Fighters ’98
The King of Fighters 2000
The King of Fighters 2002
The Last Blade 2
Top Player’s Golf
World Heroes Perfect

The machine and controllers look really nice. Personally I'm not a huge fan of fighting games but even just having the Metal Slug games in this form would be pretty neat!

It has connections for optional pad support, and I think the screen can be output on to a larger one.

Yes and yes :) . You can plug in Neo Geo controllers and output the screen via HDMI.

I love that Maxwell Powers guy in the video. I am almost certain I've heard him before on NHK World.

Faek edit:

Yup!

Not sure how comfortable I'd find it, but 40 games? Tempting.

I can't figure out if Ashens has convinced me to get it or not. Bah.

Either way you can pre-order the international version on Amazon for £129.99 here (releases 29th Oct 2018)

I did once own an AES, but the cost of keeping up with it was too much. I sold it in the end to another collector. I now have all the best Neo Geo titles on my Xbox HDD, unfortuately I've no arcade stick which is why I was tempted by the Neo Geo mini. However, no micro-switches for the Mini? May as well stick with what I've got then, not too mention that, as Ashen's rightly says, playing SNK on a bigger screen is where it's at.
