Got told that we need to start looking into nursery places ASAP apparently, as places get snapped up well in advance, and apparently it's going to cost more than our strawberry floating mortgage payments.

Yeah they can have massive waiting lists. Worth thinking about what school you want too as some nurseries are affiliated with schools and it can improve odds of getting the school want dramatically if they are at the nursery linked to that school.

Cost is bat gooseberry fool, we got lucky as our mums were able to do childcare until the free hours kicked in at 3, still don’t understand why you only get free hours under the age of 3 if you aren’t working, it’s like you aren’t working, you don’t need childcare!

There was a lot of Bing on around the time I was working my way through Black Mirror, the intersection of those shows creates some interesting scenarios.

Nursery costs a strawberry floating fortune. It's barely worth working unless you're a high earner.

Having looked at nursery costs recently, I'm suddenly so much happier about the proximity my in-laws live to us.

We're doing 3 days a week of nursery starting next week D:

I've never heard of a 'nursery' before, we just have a baby section in our creches but I use folks and sister 'n law (who I pay) but far less than a creche.

The in laws aren't far from us, but our first will end up being their 5th grandchild, and understandably they want some of their own life, so we're basically not getting any commitment from them for anything. Hoping my parents will be up to help out, but they're at least 2 hours drive away.

On the plus side, we think we've found a nursery that does term time only places, which will be a real cost saver, as my wife's a teacher.

For my in-laws, it's their second grandchild, first was born 6 months ago and because they live in London they haven't seen him nearly as much as they'd have liked. Their desperate for grandparent duties


We're month off due date now and he hasn't got himself into the right position. My wife keeps feeling him trying (which hurts a lot) but he's left it too late it seems because he's too big to get himself round. Looking like a c-section now.

It's my boy's first day at school today. Seems like yesterday that he was born and now he's a school kid!

I told him yesterday that his life is now over. He's got just over a decade of school, then 40-50 years of work before he's too old to have any fun.

Hahaha my wife is going to be a mess. Moos uniform arrive the other day, she was crying before I’d fully opened the package it came in.

I expect at the gates moo will just go “you can go now” which is what she did when starting Nursery.

He was really good. Didn't seem nervous at all and went in with no fuss.

He's only got to go 12.30 - 3.15 this week so it's good he's being eased in gently.

Makes sense.

He's doing afternoons this week and then mornings next Monday to Wednesday. Then full days from Thursday onwards.

I'm quite looking forwards to having Monday's to myself (compressed hours ftw ) but am also going to miss our trips to throw stones into the river.

We're just doing up a spare room so the boy can move into it ahead of the arrival of Boy 2 in October.

He doesn't know yet, but he's getting a Mario-themed room. We've even colour-matched the paint to Mario's red/blue clothes. Red went up at the weekend, doing the blue tonight. Starting school and getting a baby brother off the back of a weird few months will be hard enough, so we're trying to make a bit of a fuss of him for a while.

He's back now. Says he sang songs and played with sand. Said "school is amazing!" so I guess he had a good time
