Our little boy arrived with us on Friday afternoon! 3 weeks early and weighing just 5lb 6oz!

It's been a pretty stressful few days. My wife's waters broke on Wednesday evening, but labour didn't start. We went to the hospital to get it checked, and they said we could either induce immediately, or wait 24hrs to see if it starts on its own. We opted to wait, and nothing happened, so back to hospital on Thursday night to induce. By Friday morning, there'd been very little movement, but they registered that the baby was starting to get stressed, and my wife's temperature had spiked, so concluded there could well be an infection. I got the call to go in and join her on the hospital, but I was there for all of 30 minutes before she got wheeled into theatre for a caesarean under a general anaesthetic, and I don't think either of us really had time to take in what was happening. Then, an hour later, I was holding my son!

He was straight on the antibiotics to combat whatever infection it is they think he's got, sadly, but otherwise all seemed well, just very small. My wife was out of theatre shortly after and recovered quickly, but her memories of Friday are pretty patchy. I was allowed to stay on the post natal ward with them both for a few hours, then had to leave the hospital.

Yesterday was difficult too, because he became very unresponsive and stopped feeding. The doctors were concerned about this infection, and took him for a lumbar puncture to rule out meningitis, then had to connect him to a feeding tube to get some formula milk in him. After a few feeds like that, he perked up a bit, and began to feed with my wife normally as well.

The results came back this morning, and there's no sign of meningitis thank god, and his infection markers have dropped from 60 to 40, although they need to get down under 10 before discharge from hospital. Expecting them home Wednesday at this point, but there's no visiting them at the hospital because of Covid restrictions. Best I can manage is to head there and meet my wife in the car park, assuming she's recovered enough from the surgery to make it down there as well.

It's been the longest few days of my life, but so relieved to see he's improving, and otherwise perfectly well, and just can't wait to have them both home soon.

Congratulations! Christ though that sounds like a rough ride mate, hopefully he's through the worst of it now and you can get him home shortly.

Thanks all!

Latest blood tests have all been good, and the little one's infection markers are all falling at a good rate, and he's been much more alert, and they've ruled out anything major like meningitis. His last round of antibiotics is supposed to be this evening, and they want to check he's starting to put on weight again after the initial loss, then they'll hopefully confirm he's OK to come home!

It's been a weird few days, for sure. Was able to meet my wife in the hospital car park yesterday and bring in some fresh clothes, but no access to the ward. Such a strange experience being so close but not able to see him.

Glad everything is going well mate. It's a great feeling when you get them home for the first time!

It's bizarre circumstances though with not being allowed in. We were quite lucky on the day mine arrived. He popped out (well he didn't, he needed to be dragged out the lazy little git...) at 7.45am and at our hospital the Dad was only allowed to stay for an hour after the Mum was moved to a bed on the ward. But we had to wait until around 4pm for a bed to come free so we were left in the delivery room waiting until then and so I got much extra time with him. First time I've been grateful for Tory underfunding the NHS

It's a double edged sword mind, it is amazing to watch them develop and start being mobile but trust me you'll have moments where you miss the time when you could put them down somewhere and they would stay there!

Long post incoming:

My little boy has been in hospital since Friday 26th Feb. He's had a cyst in his chest that was taking up a huge amount of his chest cavity, pressing on his lungs, heart, and airways.

We'd spotted a couple of signs that something might be wrong before, a slight swelling in the front of his neck, he'd developed a wheeze when breathing sometimes, and we took him to a GP earlier that week, who just said to keep an eye on it. He was seen by a different GP (thank strawberry float) for his 6 week check on that Friday, who immediately referred us to a paediatric department nearby. He was then sent same evening to Birmingham Children's hospital, where he still is now. We had a long wait over the weekend where very little happened besides an x-ray, then Monday had us seeing lots of consultants, an ultrasound, and lots of speculation about what it might be. For a while, they thought it was something called a vascular malformation, where the veins, arteries and capillaries don't form correctly, tangle, and swell, which had us terrified, but eventually a CT scan on Wednesday confirmed it was cystic. The thing was massive though, extending from his neck down to nearly the bottom of his ribcage, and the doctors highlighted to us the massive amount of extra work he was doing to breathe, basically each breath was a full body movement for him, so no wonder he was struggling to gain weight.

Thursday he went under general anaesthetic to have drains inserted into the cysts, and then have them flushed with drugs intended to deflate the mass, and stick the inner walls together. He was kept asleep, had another treatment on Friday of the same thing, then eventually brought round late on Saturday and had his breathing tube removed. Started breathing well on his own, but was left on supporting oxygen. Fast forward to today, and he's finally had these drains removed, and he's now breathing unaided, and suddenly back to his normal self. We're just waiting for a bed to become available on another ward so he can leave ICU. So relieved now he's doing better, but it's been a long old ordeal. My wife and I have barely slept for 10 days, but we have been given accommodation next to the hospital at least, which has saved us the drive in and back, especially as only one of has been allowed on ward with him at a time.

He'll be due back for an MRI in another 4 weeks to check if the cyst is refilling, or not, and is going to need regular monitoring until he's bigger, too, but at least we can stay on top of it now.

Sounds horrible man. When my son was two months old he got a fever a couple of nights before he went for his first set of vaccinations. 111 said to just wait it out, which we did for the following day, then we went to the GP the day after and got told to go straight to Alder Hey. Turns out he had a kidney infection and he spent the rest of the week in hospital - he'd had resuscitation at birth after an emergency C-section so it was a bit of a stressful couple of months to be fair! He's got a small scar on his kidney (as do I, so looks like it's congenital), and he's a bit more prone to UTIs (it looks like he has one at the moment as it goes). He's completely healthy apart from the kidney issue though.

Hoping your little one makes a swift and full recovery :)

That's horrible to read so I can only imagine how bad it was to experience.

I'm glad he sounds like he's on the mend and hopefully he'll be fully recovered soon.

Yeah that sounds like a stressful time Knoyleo but glad to hear your boy seems to have come through it all, hopefully it'll be much more plain sailing from now on!

Glad that he's come through it and looks to be back to his normal self Knoyleo! Hope you and mum are coping too!

Lyra had her settling in session at Nursery today. Can't believe it's gone so quickly. I was worried that she'd hide behind me and refuse to come out, She basically ran in and starting shouting at the other kids that she was a triceratops and she was going to chase them. Starts full sessions next week while we work. Going to miss the little gooseberry fool.

Thanks for the kind words, all. It means a lot.

Just gotten back from the hospital for today, and he's been moved to another ward now, but don't really well. Breathing is great, and he's feeding like he hasn't eaten in a week, so they're happy he's taking in enough milk. Just need a final check tomorrow to confirm nothings swollen back up and caused an obstruction immediately, and hopefully we can get the OK to take him home again.

That’s great to hear. Hadn’t dropped into this thread in a while so I had no idea.

Our son was born with pneumonia, so he spent the first week of his life in the NICU. Because we didn’t get to spend any real time with him before he was whipped away from us and put in an incubator, we were just kind of numb for the whole week. We didn’t know how to deal with what was happening, and always had this weird disassociation with it. Like we were visiting someone else’s child. Didn’t seem real, but in hindsight that actually might have been what helped us cope.

Couldn’t imagine if he was taken in now. It’d turn my whole life upside down.

All the best Knoy, you've been right through the mill over the past couple of months by the sounds of it and I'm really sorry to hear it. Hopefully things continue to improve and he'll get home OK.
