Are there many of us in the Ruined Life club? Have to admit, I've ignored this thread pretty much entirely until now, so I only know of other parents from references in other threads. I need to learn the ropes so I can gang up on non-parents and tell them how tired I am, and start all my posts with "As a dad..." :slol:.

When we talk about good sleeping habits, is that just literally sticking to a schedule so it's always nap/bed time at the same point every day?

You can tell I have absolutely no idea .

Ours was an absolute nightmare with sleep, we had real issues with him and ended up doing a course with a sleep consultant. A few months ago he'd absolutely refuse to go to sleep if he wasn't in someone's arms (which you can imagine is very unpractical) and now as I type this, he's asleep in his cot next door as good as gold, so she definitely helped us a lot. There's lots of things you can do, but consistency with schedule and routine goes a long way, as well as not teaching bad habits-it was our fault he was reliant on sleeping on someone. Of course, some babies are no issue with their sleep at all, and will sleep fine anywhere, it's a bit of a lottery!

I wouldn't worry too much though, you pick up the basics really quickly. As an overgrown manchild who didn't want to grow up (as my wife affectionally calls me), even I managed to get the hang of it....

Our daughter would also refuse to go to sleep. Each evening we had to lay her her down, read her a story, stroke her forehead and sing to her for up to 90 minutes until she fell asleep. If we tried to leave the room before she had fallen asleep she'd scream the house down and we'd have to start the process all over again.

Eventually we got to the point where we couldn't do it anymore, it was so exhausting. After watching one of those programmes on TV about getting kids to sleep, where they would just pop the child into bed, say goodnight and leave, we tried it. First night she screamed the house down. We would reset her and leave again, but gradually leave more and more time between each interval. This worked after about 4 days and it was so liberating.

Now she has a quick story and that's it.

My son has taken to using me as a stress reliever, punching, pulling hair, grabbing ears, pinching nose, he does it all. The worst part is he thinks its strawberry floating hilarious if I do similar to him to teach him it hurts so me grabbing his ear is like Im egging him on and he does it even more. I have to admit though its great fun cos he loves being thrown around and playing rugby on the trampoline with him is brilliant.

Also, congrats Ob, dont overthink it, noone has an idea what theyre doing, just do your best and youll be grand.

Come on now, the officially sanctioned joke "kid is older than expected" age is 28. Get it right!

Oh it's about becoming parents. I took the thread title too literally. I'll probably never reproduce because I actually have ruined my life...

Now if someone could kindly teach me how this all works, that would be great. It's a myth that you have to actually change dirty nappies, right?

Just seen this OB. Congratulations and welcome to the club.

I trust you'll do the right thing and allow OB Jr to become a Trickie? Can't have them supporting a League 1 team on the downward slide? ;)

Thanks  it speaks volumes to how gooseberry fool we are when Forest look successful in comparison, despite having a hideous season themselves!

To be honest, I haven't lived in walking distance of PP for a long time now and we moved south when we left Birmingham so Derby feels a long way away these days. If it has football mates they'll all be Villa or Blues fans. I think it's bad enough when people say they support Man United because their dad does, but at least they aren't condemned to watch their team lose every week .

Update - boy's been back in intensive care for the last week. An MRI scan from the week before revealed he's been unresponsive to the previous courses of sclerotherapy, and the cyst remained basically the same size. He went for extractive surgery on Friday, which went well and seems to have gotten almost all of the mass from his chest, and most from his neck. He's still on a breathing tube, as they suspect there's now a leak somewhere in his respiratory system, as there's air escaping into his chest cavity. Further procedure tomorrow to investigate this, and confirm there's no further damage to his windpipe or vocal cords.

He's 13 weeks old, and has spent nearly 5 weeks in hospital in total now. Despite being the first of our NCT group to be born, he's now easily the smallest, and I'm really worried about how far behind he's going to be once we eventually get him home for more than a fortnight.

That sounds really gooseberry fool, I hope it all works out for you. I wouldn't worry about him being behind, I doubt there will be any long term developmental ramifications.

I hope it all works out and that you get to take him home soon Knoyleo. He might be off to a bit of a rocky start, but he's got a great dad so he'll catch up in no time.
