He's a clever boy and will work out he can remove the smart plug. But he'll be told that if he gets caught doing it, then he'll lose the TV. Giving him a time will give him the excuse of "oh I didn't realise what the time was", unplugging the smart plug is pure guilt with no possible excuses.

You can buy smart sockets but it's whether you can be arsed installing them. Maybe try the plug and if he does dick you around ban the TV until you've installed them (and don't rush so he knows how much extra effort him not being trustworthy causes). My son threw his tablet down the stairs in a huff and broke a hook off the wall, taking a chunk of plaster with it - I banned his tablet until he'd helped me fix the wall

Any smart plug that feeds into Google or Apple Home you’d imagine has the ability to report on when it’s been removed anyway, so I don’t think you really need to worry about him being crafty enough to bypass it without you knowing.

He's not crafty enough to get away with it, if he swapped plugs then he'll be silly enough have the volume up too loud or will forget to swap the plugs back. The smart plug idea is just a way of stopping the inevitable and slightly believable "oh I lost track of time" excuse.

Our boy (3) is due to start nursery in September now which is filling me with dread. Doesn’t seem ready. We’re currently investigating ASD due to his delayed speech, repetitive behaviours and sensory issues. He’s in a special playgroup at the minute with other similar kids that have been assessed already so we’re expecting some sort of confirmed diagnosis soon. He’s not what you would picture when you think “autistic kid”. Sleeps great, is fairly social, fine around strangers, plenty of eye contact, no “meltdowns” really and is generally just full of joy and energy.

Our strongest suspicion right now is that he has hyperlexia. He has no trouble reading words, even short sentences, and has a pretty massive vocabulary of nouns now. He picks up the name of something or a question/answer on the first or second go and it sticks. It’s kind of funny that we can’t get him to say “hello” or “bye bye” really at all but if you ask him “what do they eat for breakfast in France?” he’ll confidently say “croissants!” every time. He can barely say the words to twinkle twinkle little star but he can play it on his keyboard no problem.

Anyway, yeah, we have the educational psychologist assessment this Thursday so we’re just praying he gets an assistant for starting school at least. Wouldn’t mind if he starts out in the special school to be honest, but spaces are scarce apparently.

I spent a year working in Nurseries so that I could get my level 6 in Childcare. Unless its changed a lot since I was in one they are great for multi agency working, the nursery will talk to anyone who gets involved with him like psychologists and speech therapists and they will all work together for his best outcome and keep you in the loop with stuff you can do.

As for things like ASD I wasn't diagnosed as Autistic till a couple of years ago, I think sometimes its hard unless you present in an absolutely stereotypical way. I was always a social child my issues are more understanding if other people like me or not rather than being able to insert myself in groups.... so id play with kids all day but then doubt they liked me..... heck I go through life now presuming that 99% of people hate me and want me to go away.

You have taught me a new one I had never heard of hyperlexia, I have quiet enjoyed reading up on it.

All the best I am sure that with a parent like you who is on the ball and watching over his future its going to be a bright one.

Some good news! Cancer is no longer active

Considering the doctors didn’t think she would last long and they started palliative care.

She still needs major surgery on her spine as the cancer has eaten the majority of her spine leaving her able to stand up right. But amazing that the cancer is no longer eating through her.
