Seems it's OK to crack one off while watching porn or fantasising about someone else, though! :)

Had made Louise an advent calendar from a draper screw box so all the different draws had memories of us and then this morning when she got in from work at 7am in the 25th draw was two sambuca shots as it's how we met (classy I know!).

Then dropped down on one knee and popped the question and got a resounding Yes!

Such a good thing to kick off Christmas this morning :datass:

Just catching up with this thread. Good work, mate, congrats.

I've gone the opposite direction and split up with my missus (and it pretty much looks for good) on Christmas Eve. Not having spoken to each other since, the signs aren't good one bit!

Didn't you post a few months ago about having problems?

If it's what I remember maybe you're better off.

Just throwing it out there.... have any of you guys had or are still in a long distance relationship? If no longer, what was the issue? If you are, how are you making it work?

The woman I was seeing lives about 65ish miles away. Though the issue being she cannot drive. So the only time we get to see each other is if I drive (mainly weekends).

My missus is from Minnesota...it was hard at first but we made it work over the phone and skype, she's been here in Dublin for past 5 years though. I'm proof though that they can work out.

I find it only works if you have a rough idea of when it's going to stop being long distance, something to aim for.

I found it taught us to utilise space apart, something we still do now with great benefits. I see some couples in each other 24/7 and then wonder why she's a strawberry floating psycho control freak. But again, it was good till it got serious then one of us had to move. Luckily I move a lot and had vowed to return to Glasgow anyway. If you're both stuck where you're both either too stubborn or tied down to make the sacrifice you're strawberry floated.

My girlfriend is doing a PhD in Lancaster and I'm in London. We've been long distance for around 2 years of the 4 years we've dated. We typically get to see each other for one weekend every 3 weeks. It's only manageable because there's a set end date for it.

I wouldn't trust Photek though. He has proven himself adept at forming a deep relationship with something when at first it seems awkward, messy and doesn't always work.

He bought the Master Chief Collection at launch after all!

Here all week, folks.

I did long distance with the ex. 200 miles apart, we'd see each other every other weekend, alternating who would travel. It was great - probably the best part of the relationship, TBH. Stuff used to get pretty filthy when we'd meet up, and we'd be on the phone a lot in between.

I moved up to Newcastle to live with her and got bored pretty quickly - I'd have been high-tailing it back to the Midlands if I didn't have some great, sociable colleagues, was 28 and living in one of the UK's great party cities. That probably helped paper over the cracks at home, if I'm honest.

Based on that, Gandalf, my advice would be, if you're struggling to make it work and having doubts now, those little problems will be magnified when you are closer. It might feel like living closer would solve the problems: I reckon it'd exacerbate them. I think you're better off out.

I italicised the wrong word, but otherwise don't know how I could have phrased it any more clearly or succinctly.

My advice was, he's in a broken relationship (or was in one...) that isn't working over a distance of 65 miles. He clearly suspects that closing that gap, or making the distance relationship work, would be the answer.

I'm saying I don't think that would be the case, and that being much geographically closer would make the existing problems worse, rather than solve them.

No, what does exacerbate mean?
