I mean, seriously, loads of it is just like '...eh?!' The Daenerys bits in particular are very confusing.

Some things are in the same place, some things are ahead. Some things are in the same place but have had brand new stuff placed before them.

I don't want to talk about the show in the book thread, but I've seen the 1st episode and it seemed really faithful. But what you've just described there is a bit messy for my liking. Think I'll just wait it out for Winds of Winter.

The first season was faithful. It got progressively less so.

I think the faith's champion could be the Sand Snake that Doran Martell sent to the sept. He sent 3 to various parts of Kings Landing. And hopefully they'll get revenge for their father!

THE WINDS OF WINTER is not finished.

Believe me, it gave me no pleasure to type those words. You're disappointed, and you're not alone. My editors and publishers are disappointed, HBO is disappointed, my agents and foreign publishers and translators are disappointed... but no one could possibly be more disappointed than me. For months now I have wanted nothing so much as to be able to say, "I have completed and delivered THE WINDS OF WINTER" on or before the last day of 2015.

But the book's not done.

Nor is it likely to be finished tomorrow, or next week. Yes, there's a lot written. Hundreds of pages. Dozens of chapters. (Those 'no pages done' reports were insane, the usual garbage internet journalism that I have learned to despise). But there's also a lot still left to write. I am months away still... and that's if the writing goes well. (Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't.) Chapters still to write, of course... but also rewriting. I always do a lot of rewriting, sometimes just polishing, sometimes pretty major restructures.

But I won't make excuses. There are no excuses. No one else is to blame. Not my editors and publishers, not HBO, not David & Dan. It's on me. I tried, and I am still trying. I worked on the book a couple of days ago, revising a Theon chapter and adding some new material, and I will writing on it again tomorrow. But no, I can't tell you when it will be done, or when it will be published. Best guess, based on our previous conversations, is that Bantam (and presumably my British publisher as well) can have the hardcover out within three months of delivery, if their schedules permit. But when delivery will be, I can't say. I am not going to set another deadline for myself to trip over. The deadlines just stress me out.

I am going back to my stance from last March, before all this. It will be done when it's done. And it will be as good as I can possibly make it.

Having said all that, I know what the next question will be, because hundreds of you have already asked it of me. Will the show 'spoil' the novels?

Maybe. Yes and no.

I didn't see this coming.

The books were never going to be able to stay ahead of the TV shows given his track record and it was futile to even hope that they would. I've had to give up on the TV show now but I'd imagine trying to stay spoiler free is going to be difficult given how quickly the red wedding flooded Facebook.

I think I mentioned in here before that I sometimes feel sorry for G Martin. Over 20 years he's been either writing about this story/characters or spending much of his spare time thinking about them - many writers out there would be utterly sick to death of it by now.

And I sometimes wonder whether deep down Martin is. The last 2 books didn't give the impression of a writer who was enjoying his work, although that's largely a hunch/vague perception of the books I got. I have this sad image of him waking up in the morning and instantly dreading that point in the day where he has to walk over to the writing desk.

It's an interesting quandary though; what if an older writer initially starts a great series then realises he's not really suited to having just 1 longterm, complex project? Especially when he's getting to an age where he wants to be winding down and just enjoying things, stress-free? It must be an awkward position to be in, especially when big TV bucks start flowing in too.

I'd actually be okay with him saying 'you know what, I'm walking away from it all' and never releasing another SoIaF book. If that's how he feels inside. He doesn't owe anybody anything.
