Wikpedia wrote:A Song of Ice and Fire is a series of epic fantasy novels by American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. Martin began writing the series in 1991 and the first volume was published in 1996. Originally planned as a trilogy, the series now consists of four published volumes with the fifth expected to be published on July 12, 2011 and a further two planned. In addition there are three prequel novellas available, with several more planned, and a series of novellas consisting of excerpts of the main novels. One of these excerpt novellas has won a Hugo Award. The series has been translated into more than 20 languages and the fourth volume reached the top of The New York Times bestseller lists upon its release. Overall, the series has more than 6 million copies in print in the USA[3] and sold more than 7 million worldwide.
The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in a fictional world, primarily upon a continent called Westeros but also on a large landmass to the east, known as Essos. Most of the characters are human but as the series progresses other races are introduced, such as the cold and menacing Others from the far North and fire-breathing dragons from the East, both races thought to be extinct by the people of the story. There are three principal storylines in the series: the chronicling of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros among several competing families; the rising threat of the Others, who dwell beyond an immense wall of ice that forms Westeros' northern border; and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king who was murdered in another civil war 15 years previously, to return to Westeros and claim her rightful throne. As the series progresses, all three storylines become increasingly interwoven and dependent on each other.
The series is told in the third-person through the eyes of a number of point of view characters. By the end of the fourth volume, there have been 17 such characters with multiple chapters and eight who only have one chapter apiece.
The growing popularity of the series led to it being optioned by HBO for development of a television adaptation, named Game of Thrones after the first novel. A pilot episode was produced in 2009 and a series commitment for nine further episodes was made in March 2010.
The series premiered on April 17, 2011, and two days later, the network picked the show up for a second season.[7]

There are board games and role-playing games based on the books available, as well as a collection of artwork based on and inspired by the series.
The French video game company Cyanide has announced that they have partnered with Martin to create a video game adaption of the books, entitled A Game of Thrones: Genesis

You may want to get A Clash of Kings first.

Anyone know where I can get all the books for a good price?

Amazon are doing them all for around £5, and seeing as Book 3 is split into two parts (I think) then thats £25 for the lot.

Yeah the paperback of Book 3 is split into 2 parts unfortunately, but if it was one book it would be unreadable in paperback... I can't wait for the next one, preordered with my amazon vouchers I got for my birthday!

You may want to stick a spoiler warning in the first post, and I guess people need to say what book they're spoiling from.

Lego Grand Theft Auto... You KNOW you would buy it.

I think GGRM must be rolling in the dough after this series.

I've been trying to find A Feast for Crows at bookstores in town for ages, but now even the few copies they had left of A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings are gone! Probably a few people reading fantasy for the first time as well, which is nice. ASoIAF should be a light start also, considering how light it is on the fantastical front. :D

Got my brothers to read the first book. I think they're in for the long haul already

So this is a book thread, book spoilers, DO NOT CLICK THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THEM ALL BLAH BLAH

The Stark children are totally coming back for vengeance by the end of this series. Arya as an assassin with a wolfpack at her command, Jon has the Nightwatch, Sansa will be Littlefingering up that gooseberry fool, Bran will be a crazy crippled wizard, Rickon will be totally feral. Tyrion will somehow escape their wrath because he is awesome.

I'm calling this gooseberry fool already, inaccurately and influenced by my own imagination.

No offence or anything but personally I'd call this as incredibly short-term. Even if something along the lines of this happens there's still the main issue that the politics of men are peanuts in comparison as to waht has be threatened coming from the North. Winter is coming after all....

I've downloaded them all onto my iPad.

*cough, cough*

I see it as an alternative to going down to the local library and get the book for free.

Lots of libraries do actually now offer ebooks to loan. And if you do it through them, the author still gets royalties (6p per loan I believe, but still...)

6p isn't much. :shifty: I wonder how they pay for it as it's free.

My local library doesn't do ebooks. Ive asked and the librarians there seems to be lost when "ebook" is mentioned.
