Council tax, innit. Its one of the things your money goes towards at least.

But yeah, 6p is hardly anything, but it all adds up I suppose.

Amazon are doing them all for around £5, and seeing as Book 3 is split into two parts (I think) then thats £25 for the lot.

Yeah the paperback of Book 3 is split into 2 parts unfortunately, but if it was one book it would be unreadable in paperback... I can't wait for the next one, preordered with my amazon vouchers I got for my birthday!

You may want to stick a spoiler warning in the first post, and I guess people need to say what book they're spoiling from.

I read the paperback version of Storm of Swords. All one book. 8-)

Ahaa it must be massive... And the book is as well!

Yep. The first two thirds or so anyway.

Mental decision if you ask me. Two thirds of a new book before we discover (major end of last published book spoiler!!):

what strawberry floating comeuppance Cersei is (hopefully) finally going to get from the churchy types, among other things

Why change the format at all, and give us a book without so many major characters, but in which so much time has passed that when we read the next we'll be (even more) lost (than usual) as to when things happen in relation to each other.

I'm so mad, I might not even buy... ah who am I kidding!

George R.R. Martin did explain in one of his novels that the events happened is not in sequence of a timeline.

Seems barmy as it's like he forget all about it and hastily added them into the next novel.

So this is a book thread, book spoilers, DO NOT CLICK THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THEM ALL BLAH BLAH

The Stark children are totally coming back for vengeance by the end of this series. Arya as an assassin with a wolfpack at her command, Jon has the Nightwatch, Sansa will be Littlefingering up that gooseberry fool, Bran will be a crazy crippled wizard, Rickon will be totally feral. Tyrion will somehow escape their wrath because he is awesome.

I'm calling this gooseberry fool already, inaccurately and influenced by my own imagination.

No offence or anything but personally I'd call this as incredibly short-term. Even if something along the lines of this happens there's still the main issue that the politics of men are peanuts in comparison as to waht has be threatened coming from the North. Winter is coming after all....

Not really a serious suggestion. I mean, I do hope they get their vengeance but whatever the cost, the people of Westeros are absolutely screwed in the end. A winter where mothers will smother their babies, Zombies and Mance Rayder with his horn that can destroy the wall in the North, Dany, the dragons and the Dothraki/Slave army, in fighting between the houses of the Isle, 'pirates' and the arrival of Euron from the Iron Islands. So screwed. So very screwed.

I'd say there'll be tenuous alliances against the horde from the south. What happens with the wall and the Snow zombies/white walkers eventually breaching it is another matter entirely. I don't see anyone in Westeros surviving in the end, as for the Summer Isles, huh, I have no idea. I'm wondering if they are affected by the change in seasons

Spoiler for those who haven't read all of the books!

Well we have various people going to Dany. Namely Victorian Greyjoy, Quentyn Martell (who we haven't met yet) and most likely Tyrion as well...

I'm interested to find out who Coldhands is actually, and whether the reported death of Davos in AFfC is genuine.

Lego Grand Theft Auto... You KNOW you would buy it.

So, here's a theory for people who've read all the books;

John Snow isn't Ned's Bastard. He's Ned's Sister's son. His father? That Targayran dude that Ned's sister ran off with to that tower in Dorne. You know, the one where Ned found her on her death bed, saying "Promise me, Ned"? Yeah? Remember that?

So, you've got a boy born of Stark and Targaryan blood. Ie. Ice and Fire. Thus John is the prophecised King who'll bring peace to the Kingdom.

This would also explain why Ned never speaks of John's mother, and how someone so obsessed with honour has a bastard, somehow.

Boom

There's a whole pile of theory regarding Jon Snow's origin. There's a possibility we'll see more about it in ADwD. If I remember correctly, Howland Reed is the only one who knows about it.

One of the more interesting theories I read was on Neogaf not so long ago, about the Faceless men and their role in all this. Some crazy reading (and I think it came from a guy who smokes too much weed). Here it is, courtesy of a guy called Red Nightmare.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on what game the Faceless Men are playing. Why are they infiltrating the Citadel? Why did they recruit Arya Stark? (Do you really think she's with the FM by chance? No way.)

I think the role of the FM in the overall story is huge and fairly obvious, but most fans of the series can't see what's right under their noses.

The FM are agents of the Great Other. Who do you think is their One God of Many Faces? He is Death. He is the Great Other.

All of the Gods have their servants and agents in Westeros and Essos. Why would the Great Other be any different?

The Great Other is planning to escape his prison in the North and take back his world. To do this he needs help. The FM are paving the way for his return.

Skeptical? Don't be. It's all there in AFfC if you read carefully.

Where did the the FM originate? They originated in the slave mines of Old Valyria to combat the oppression of the Lords of Valyria.

What did Valyria have? Valyria had dragons, dragon fire, dragon steel, and dragon glass.

To what weapons are the Others vulnerable? See above.

Who brought about the Doom of Valyria? The FM did.

Why did they want Valyria doomed? Because the power and weapons of Valyria would be a huge threat to the Others, when they returned.

What do the FM want in the Citadel? The maesters were men of science, opposed to magic and dragons. The maestros played a big role in eliminating dragons from the world. They have knowledge and maybe weapons capable of defeating dragons. With dragons back in the world with the last (?) great Dragon Lord of Valyria (Dany), the FM and the Great Other desperately need the tools to fight them.

Why do the FM need Arya Stark? The powerful (but ignorant of his power and identity) descendant of the great Lords of Valyria is a huge potential threat to the Others. (I am speaking of course of Rhaegar Targaryen's son "Jon Snow"). Jon is well-protected and hard to eliminate. What FM assassin could get close to him and kill him? His beloved little sister, Arya.

I didn't read this theory anywhere. It came to me a few weeks ago when I was stoned and deep in thought after my 3rd reading of AFFC.

And people think AFFC is boring and uneventful. Haha.

I'm going to be proven right about this. Just watch. :)

Yup. Interesting nonetheless.

Interesting that he assumes John Snow is Rhaegor's Son.

But yeah, that's a pretty mental theory.

It's the most popular theory going around. Doesn't mean it's right, but the signs are there all over the first book to indicate that.

I've been re-reading the books in preparation for Dance of Dragons, and there's loads of references to Lyanna and recently I got to the point where Ned started to think about Rhaegar for the first time in years - can't remember what exactly, but Ned's dream after he had his leg broken....

He kept on asking the White Bull and the Sword of the Morning that he looked for them at the Battle of the Trident, the fall of King's Landing, etc, etc and they were not there. They were badly missed there, and what was so important for them to be at the Tower of Joy? Why? Lyanna? What is so important about her? She has to be more than just a passing fancy of Rhaegar for the Kingsguard to protect her. Their vows to protect the King surely must override their vow to protect Lyanna, unless she had a baby... on a bed of blood and blue flowers... and kept asking Ned "Promise me".

Ned kept on hearing Lyanna, mostly when King Robert is bitching on about Rhaegar and waxing about Lyanna - that's some indication of guilt of keeping a huge secret from him.

Edit: Put all that in a spoiler. ;)

What's your thinking about that the Dragon has Three Heads?

There's been a few references to that, and there's a theory that Aegon the Conquerer was one, his two sisters (and wives) were the other two heads.

So if Daenerys is the 1st Head, where/who are the other two? Especially she has a trio that needs to be ridden? ;)

The second one could be Jon? But the third? Some people seems to think it could be Daenerys's brother - that was supposedly bashed in by the Mountain at the Sack of King's Landing? Bit of a stretch!

Anyone know what's the difference between these two boxsets ?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0007448058/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/000744804X/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

I'm guessing the more expensive one is just better quality but I'd like to know if anyone has bought the books separately and could say which is the nicer style of the two.

They both look fairly similar. Very strange, considering the different prices.

Doesn't look like either is out now and there's no release date down. Even buying all five books separately would be cost effective, I think. All can be had for around a fiver or just below, so you're talking £25 for all books including the two parts of book three.

I think it's great everyone seems to be purchasing these books and giving them a fair read. Quite a lot of people from work have went out and bought them or have expressed an interest in them.

I need a question answered by you guys who have read the books.

I've watched the whole of the first TV series, and I'm 400 pages into the first book.

Do I need to continue reading the book, as I'm finding it a struggle having just watched the series, and knowing what is going to happen, or can I just skip on ahead to the 2nd book?

No spoilers please, I've managed to avoid reading the thread to type this.

If you want to read the second book, I strongly recommend you read the first as well. 400 pages in? You must be more than halfway already?
