Still not falling for the Sonic Cycle hype. This game is going to be gooseberry fool and all the positive impressions of it are WRONG

If this turns out bad I genuinely think I'll give up on Sonic forever.

Aww yisss.

Presumably now we're this close to launch there's no chance it'll be physically released too, despite the placeholders at Game and The Game Collection.

Special stage

Apparently the aesthetic was inspired by Saturn's Sonic R and Sonic Jam's Sonic World.

I'd say it's more Sonic CD based. Infact it looks almost exactly like a special stage from Sonic CD, right down to the UFO thing in the middle right.

The "Sonic CD-ness" of this is starting to concern me. I know it has it's supporters but for me CD will always sit some way below the MegaDrive games - the level design is just so, for want of a better word, "choppy" in it - and the time travel mechanic just breaks up the flow in a fairly annoying way.

I'm still hopeful on Mania, but I have to admit I am less excited than I was when it was first announced.

I really liked the time travel element if Sonic CD. It's my favourite Sonic after 3 & Knuckles.

Time travel was interesting in terms of getting to explore earlier and later versions of a zone, however the way it was actually implemented meant that if you just wanted to play through a zone you either had to actively avoid the signposts or to stop moving quickly as soon as you did hit one.

Also the load times when moving between past, present and future were annoying - I can see how a modern game could do something quite interesting with the change happening "live" on-screen, but for me it just didn't quite feel right as it stands.

Don't get me wrong it's still a good game, I just have a lot more affection for 1, 2, and 3&K.

S3&K's blue spheres, Sonic 1's background fish, Sonic R/Jam's style of Sonic, Sonic CD's layout... Hope it's not too clumsy a mash-up. :dread:

Sonic Forever sounds like it could be the title for the next great Sonic game.
