Sonic Utopia is a fan made, open world Sonic the Hedgehog demo

...and you can sample it right now, if you like.

No matter how hard it tries, Sega can't seem to nail a modern Sonic game – at least, nothing has managed to match the affection we still hold for the '90s platformers. I'd argue that Sonic Generations was pretty decent, but overall, Sonic games are pretty average nowadays. There's no point sugarcoating it.

Sonic Utopia is a fan made game which imagines Sonic in an open world setting. As the video below demonstrates, it's more high-speed parkour than platformer, coming across like a meeting between SSX and Yooka Laylee. According to its creator Mr Lange, Utopia is "an experiment that not only tries to expand on Sonic gameplay in an intuitive way in 3D, but also aims to capture the best of Sonic's style and tie it together in a cohesive experience."

Although the game is still in a "raw state" you can download the demo and give it a go. (Demo link above)

I don't know what Sega will make of this, but optimistically, it'd be cool if this guy got a job making a halfway-decent official Sonic game. Imagine that?

That... actually doesn't look all that bad! :o

I take issue with the world's textures making Sonic look micro-sized, but other than that, it looks like a Sonic 1 version of what I thought Sonic 06 would be like, before that particular atrocity was revealed for what it is.

Every 3D Sonic game I've played has been an utter travesty, either because of stupid ideas (i.e. walking around a town interacting with humans) or this obsession with speed. The original Sonic games had some speedy sections, but it wasn't constant, uncontrollable speed, which is what a lot of the recent attempts seem to focus on.

That 'Utopia' game at least looks like it takes a different approach, and one that actually looks enjoyable. Nice music as well.

As the guy talking said his favourite is 2, but 3 is clearly superior. And I agree 3 is superior.

Looks alright, nice that they are going back but I lost faith in Sonic ages ago!

This still looks great. The new visual real estate thing - with widescreen and smaller characters, gives it a less 'full' and 'busy' feeling than the old 4:3 games but the gameplay itself looks top. It seems to be a refinement of Sonic 2-era gameplay with tight, self-contained levels, compared to Sonic 3's multi-tiered, scenery-transforming, epic and exploratory style. But I've a feeling it will actually play better than Sonic 2 - we all forget how many ideal racing/platforming lines were foiled by cheap spike positions or enemy surprises that ruined the flow and had to be learned to be avoided. This looks freer and more carefree.

I'm assuming that's a collage because the wire is clipped by the scenery and there's that funny bit in the top left.

That funny bit in the top left means it's nicked from OPM where we had a screen overlap thing going on with the page layouts. Yep, we have exclusive Sonic Mania screens and level hands-on stuff in the current issue (which has been on sale since 20 Dec and will be replaced by a new issue at the start of next week).

We don't doctor images on the mag though – that wire clipping was in the shot supplied by Sega.

Bit unsure about those recoloured sonic 1 enemies (armadillo things) but I like the music, very 2D Sonic Team-ish.

So glad they've gone with the original design for Sonic in this rather than the hideous newer one. Dread to think what that might've looked like in 2D. Looking good though so far. :datass:
