The wait is over! The new Super NES Classic Mini has finally been sent to those who pre-ordered it back in June.

The console comes with 21 classic games pre-installed and you can fit it in the palm of your hand.

So…

  • If you’ve got a Super NES Classic Mini… Why did you buy one? And how are you finding it?
  • If you’ve not got one, why not?
  • What do you think of the concept of these ‘classic mini’ consoles? Are there any other older consoles you’d like to see re-released like this?
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE IDEA OF A PS1 CLASSIC MINI?

I'd love that!
I'd like that!
I wouldn't like that!
I'd hate that!
Not sure.

From a licensing and deal perspective, I'd imagine it'd be a little more difficult (& expensive) for Sony to pull this off than Nintendo or SEGA. I'm sure many publishers would be up for it though. As we've found in the GRecommends thread though, how on earth do you narrow it down to just 20 or so?

I doubt they'd offer as many as 20 games, you could easily see them having 10 mainstream classics on it though:

Metal Gear Solid
Tomb Raider
Final Fantasy 7
Gran Turismo
Wipeout
Crash Bandicoot
Resident Evil
Tekken
Spyro
Tony Hawk

I'd buy one.

Considering Sony already fabricated down the emotion engine for PS3 I doubt they would find this difficult. But for it to be cheap they would also need to use a system on chip like Nintendo. Licensing wise I think it would be more difficult because Sony depended so heavily on third party support. Although maybe they already have enough like resident evil, silent hill, mgs on ps classics for example and Sony games like medieval and grand turismo (although why anyone would want to play the latter today I have no idea).

Although the appeal is kind of weak considering you can download ps1 games on PS3 for a few quid and the controllers are exactly the same whereas Nintendo are really expensive and have weird systems at present.

They also don't really hold up nearly as well as pixel art and the frame rate could be pretty weak.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Because Ad7 Poser pre-ordered all of them

Does anyone remember in the PS2 options menu there was the ability to smooth over the graphics of PS1 Games?? Some titles looked a lot, lot better on PS2 than PSone. A few games were even stickered on the box with 'runs better on PS2' (Driver 2 was one; loading times, framerate and graphics were all better, whereas the PSone could barely cope). Presumably they could do something even more impressive now.

The alternative is they could use the PC versions instead - Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy VII, Destruction Derby, WipEout and Resident Evil being the most notable. There's the unreleased arcade version of Tekken 3. There are workarounds.

I’ll buy it but only if it needs to be turned upside down to work.

I've got 250 PS1 games, and a PS3 hooked up to my TV. Think I'll pass.

Nah you'll still buy it like I will, despite probably owning every game on it

This doesn't appeal in the same way as SNES. 16 bit has real retro style with chiptune sfx and the limitations of what could be done graphically meant they had they had to push boundaries of imagination. I played Star fox for the first time and was really impressed. They are timeless.

Ps1 on the other hand I think looks blocky and doesn't have the same charm. It is a period of gaming that has not aged well. Maybe I might feel different in another 10 years.

Without trying to sound like a fanboy I think Sony might be a bit bitter they didn't get into the industry earlier as this is a niche fad they can barely fill, unless they maybe focus on 2D games.

I like these purely from a technical aspect of seeing just how small consoles can be made.
It will be interesting to see if we can get to a point where PS2 or even PS3 can be given the tiny console treatment.

Get rid of the multi disc games and you'd easily get 15-20 games on there, Flash memory is durt cheap these days and at around 700MB per disc your looking at roughly 16GB of needed space for 20 games plus the necessary system software/emulator/saves.

I suppose an alternative option would be to relaunch the PSone with a host of improvements (HDMI, wireless controllers, improved frame rates) and re-release a selection of games separately, maybe even alongside the option to also download them from the PS store.

They could easily get away with doing limited/collectors editions of games.

This should include Ape Escape since it's just about the only PAL PSone game that doesn't work on a PS3.

Talking of PS3, it is a nice coincidence Sony have taken backwards compatibility out of the PS4, allowing them room (and a reason) to now do something with the PS1 separately.

Wasn't there an actual PS1 chip in the PS3 whereas with the original 60GB PS3's the PS2 was very hit and miss emulation?
