Sony UK boss Ray Maguire believes the slow-starting PS3 has only begun to hit top speed as competing formats run out of steam.

"Yes, we might take a bit longer sometimes to bring a product to market, but when we do, we bring you the most powerful gaming platform ever to hit - and it will be something that will around for a very long time," Maguire told our sister site GamesIndustry.biz.

"It's nowhere near even halfway through its lifecycle, and I could argue that some other competing formats are on their way down right now."

Maguire joked that Sony hadn't worked out how to "have a child in less than nine months", although rushing games and software was something the company is keen to avoid.

He used PlayStation Home as an example of this; an oft-delayed and ambitious project, but one that needs to be right on day one, rather than being endlessly patched to meet expectations.

"We have to make sure that things are born at the right time, that the infrastructures are right and are tested, and that they actually work. It's one of the things that PlayStation has been known for - a plug-and-play mentality, rather than a patch-patch mentality.

"Getting it right is more important than getting it out quick, and I think it's very difficult to make that decision, to hold something up, but again I think it was the right decision to make sure that we were defining along the line where it is that we're trying to go to."

Home will roll out to the masses as an open beta sometime this Christmas, supposedly, before launching fully in 2009.

One can dream if you're Sony.

 The 360 is eating into the PS3 crowd slowly. While the Wii is bringing in a whole new crowd. Even if they were running out of steam, they've done so well and taken a fair share of what the PS3 could have had. Sony talking gooseberry fool again. No wonder they're so reviled nowadays by anyone who doesn't have brand loyalty.

The other consoles are already profit-makers

Sony really do keep coming out with some crackers don't they. This particular quote I have issue with, the PS3 firmware seems to have to strawberry floating update every time I turn the poxy thing on. I wouldn't mind if it didn't take so long to actually install.

There's really nothing these Sony PR's won't say.

Dunno why people feel the need to make a thread for every stupid PR comment from them, though.

Perhaps there should be an official thread?

I'm hoping that Sony's lack of impact may mean that the 360 can hang around longer. Gear 2 is all the graphical impact I will ever need and I think concentrating on co-op and online aspects can be done now.

720 for 2011 to go up against the PS3 when it finally hits its stride.

Ironic he should mention the word Steam. Seeing as how the PS3 isn't getting THE BEST game of the year. (Left for Dead in case you're wondering)

Indeed. I hate to say "Little Big Planet" here, but... Little Big Planet.

The comments are just laughable. Every single strawberry floating time. Why can't they keep their mouths shut? They just look like complete and utter disingenuous (borderline lying, unless they're living on another planet) dicks.

That's actually quite telling of how often you actually turn it on if you have to deal with an Update...

Poor Sony, they can't seem to tell when to STFU.

PSP and PS2, yeah?

Astonishing. I can't switch my PS3 on without having to download and then install a firmware upgrade. Which takes strawberry floating ages. Plug and play? Shrug and wait, more like.

I wish they would keep quiet and spend some money on TV advertising for Little Big Planet, Motorstorm PR and Resistance 2.

Also they could have got SEGA to advertise the best PS3 game so far in Valkyria Chronicles.

Why the :? ? The servers are strawberry floated, all the bloody time. As countless pages in the thread on here prove.

There's been some really heavy print advertising for Motorstorm (and LBP for that matter). The former had a DPS in the Mirror the other day, and one in Shortlist too. LBP's been in the Metro and the Mirror too, to my knowledge.

In fairness, I like my PS3. But the amount of firmware updates I have to deal with is ridiculous. And I still can't work out how 360 online updates take all of 30 seconds, where as with the PS3 I have to go and wash my face CLEAN OFF before it finishes.

PR puff is one thing, but outright fibbing just makes them look like morons.

Running out of steam ? I am running out of hours in the week to play all the strawberry floating games I am getting on the 360!! :fp: Maybe if I got the PS3 then I would only have to turn it on once a week.
