PostSony launches new "Wena" luxury watch range

Techradar/Sony wrote:Montblanc, Cartier, Tag Heuer... Sony? Not quite yet - despite a foray into pricey watches with the clever Fes Watch U, Sony has never claimed to be a luxury watch maker, until now - well, ish.

The granddaddy of Japanese tech has turned its successfully crowdfunded product into a collection of smart straps and watch heads, going by the name - Wena.

The straps are a great idea - they supplement watch heads to add smart functionality including mobile payments. Launching in two flavors - the Wena Wrist Pro and the Wena Wrist Active, the Pro is all about style and the Active is all about sensors.

If you’re after a complete package - a smart band and a matching watch - Sony has also introduced a suite of premium watch heads (the actual timepiece) designed to complement the straps perfectly.

The name wena stands for "wear electronics naturally" and expresses how everyday products can evolve with innovation. Choose a wena wrist pro or wena wrist active smart band, combine it with your precious watch or a new watch face, then discover a whole range of smart functions without compromising tradition.

First, choose a head...

Wena Wrist Three Hands Head

Image

Simple design that expresses the wena concept
A watch designed to be simple and worn effortlessly, to carry the charm, accuracy and substance of an analogue watch. A classic design that doesn’t try too hard, and immediately becomes a comfortable part of your everyday life.

Beautiful, high precision case
Designed for visibility and precision, both the case diameter and thickness have a satisfying volume, for a comfortable weight and presence which perfectly matches the wena band. Unlike other watch heads, the case and lugs are separate precision parts to realise a beautiful, cylindrical case and an elegant hairline finish. Deceptive simplicity for classic functional beauty.

Simple dial face for enhanced visibility
The Three hands model carries a beautifully clear face without numerals. The beveled dial makes the scale easy to read, when viewing the watch at an angle.

Wena Wrist Solar Head

Image

Solar powered
The rear of the dial houses a solar battery unit so you’ll never have to worry about changing the batteries. Just 1 or 2 minutes of charging under full sun can deliver a full day of use for the Three Hands or Chronograph models.

Comfortable, low-profile design
Reducing the case size to just 40mm - smaller than the standard model - makes this watch easy to wear with anything from formal suits to active sportswear. The streamlined case has a subtle yet sporty feel, and the shape of the lugs along the curve of the band fit the wrist perfectly so you can wear it in comfort all day long.

Functionality and luxury conceptualized
The dial is surface-treated producing a radial pattern, and multiple fine layers of paint allow light to pass through to the solar movement while maintaining a beautiful metallic lustre. The metal bar index features both hairline and mirrored surfaces, achieving high visibility and a sense of refined quality. The chronograph model’s outer ring also features a tachometer that adds to the sporty image.

Tough, sapphire glass windshield
A spherical sapphire glass windshield provides excellent scratch-resistance. Use of a single-sided non-reflective coating guarantees visibility even in bright sunlight.

Three Hands, Standard (WNW-HWT01B): RRP£100
Chronograph Solar (WNW-HCS01B): RRP£350
Three Hands Solar (WNW-HTS01B): RRP£300

Then choose a Smart band...

Turn your favourite watch into a smart watch, all the latest smart features are incorporated into the strap: make contactless payments, monitor your health and check calls and messages all from your wrist. Choose a Wena watch face to go with your Wena wrist pro strap or just add your own favourite watch face to create a personalised smartwatch that's literally like no other. Compatible with any 18mm, 20mm and 22mm watch faces.

Nice design but I'm not sure I want to wear a wiener on my wrist.

£100 for a watch? That's low end, no?

Well, at least we can see how quickly a luxury brand can be born and then die so good on Sony for bringing us this amazing social experiment.

Making the strap the smart part is a neat idea, I like it more than smart watches for sure.

The band is priced separately, so the minimum price is about £500 for the complete Sony watch.

Oh, I just skimmed it. Would definitely rather get a nice 'classic' watch for that price.

I haven't worn a watch for about 20 years.

This doesn't convince me that I need to change that position.

I wear a povo waterproof Sekonda I got from Argos about 10 years ago for £15. Everyone always guesses its worth incorrectly (around £50) so that's good enough for me. Well okay I would like something better, but at the same time I've grown strangely attached to it.

Only interested in this if it has backwards compatibility for my old watches.

I assume it's pronounced the same way as 'wiener'.

Stealth watch thread? Love a nice watch.

Was briefly craving a Patek Philippe before I remembered I'm not a millionaire. Do hold their value very well though.

Yeah, I was tempted until the adverts said you never actually own them, you merely look after them for the next generation. strawberry float that.

The idea of the strap by itself is sort of good, but the thing is these have to pair with another "full" smart device to get the most out of them, and troubleshoot/charge/update both of these things, all the time, forever.

If someone could make an actual phone strap by itself, that took calls over handsfree and simple text messages, with calendar alerts etc., I'd be interested. As I want to interact as little with the actual "computer" part as possible, not just have a shortcut to the full blown time-wasting, life devouring experience that a smart device actually is.

As they inevitable drop massively in price I might add a strap to a normal watch and link it to a phone I never touch.

So much of the smart watch "experience" is supposed to keep your hands on a smartphone less, when really it's just piling another layer of abstraction on top of it for more $$$ per data addiction. They never seem to really try and be useful in their own right, so a luxury watch after all, then.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."
