Sony launches new "Wena" luxury watch range

The granddaddy of Japanese tech has turned its successfully crowdfunded product into a collection of smart straps and watch heads, going by the name - Wena.

The straps are a great idea - they supplement watch heads to add smart functionality including mobile payments. Launching in two flavors - the Wena Wrist Pro and the Wena Wrist Active, the Pro is all about style and the Active is all about sensors.

If you’re after a complete package - a smart band and a matching watch - Sony has also introduced a suite of premium watch heads (the actual timepiece) designed to complement the straps perfectly.

The name wena stands for "wear electronics naturally" and expresses how everyday products can evolve with innovation. Choose a wena wrist pro or wena wrist active smart band, combine it with your precious watch or a new watch face, then discover a whole range of smart functions without compromising tradition.

Solar powered
The rear of the dial houses a solar battery unit so you’ll never have to worry about changing the batteries. Just 1 or 2 minutes of charging under full sun can deliver a full day of use for the Three Hands or Chronograph models.

Comfortable, low-profile design
Reducing the case size to just 40mm - smaller than the standard model - makes this watch easy to wear with anything from formal suits to active sportswear. The streamlined case has a subtle yet sporty feel, and the shape of the lugs along the curve of the band fit the wrist perfectly so you can wear it in comfort all day long.

Functionality and luxury conceptualized
The dial is surface-treated producing a radial pattern, and multiple fine layers of paint allow light to pass through to the solar movement while maintaining a beautiful metallic lustre. The metal bar index features both hairline and mirrored surfaces, achieving high visibility and a sense of refined quality. The chronograph model’s outer ring also features a tachometer that adds to the sporty image.

Tough, sapphire glass windshield

The band is priced separately, so the minimum price is about £500 for the complete Sony watch.
