I think there's probably a market for this. It's expensive for what it provides but I can imagine there is a market that will see this an easy, elegant solution that allows them to be able to play their PS5 while they are away from home. Add that to people in a household where they won't always have access to their TV and I think they'll sell a decent enough number to justify its existence.

Yes. It works the same as remote play on any other device.

I regularly stream PS5 to my laptop downstairs, don't they both need to be on same wifi connection?

The PSN stuff is mental to no be included.

On my phone right now for Xbox I can play any disc or downloaded game or Gamepass cloud games with a controller or touchscreen if I'm feelong like getting angry. Not sure why this device isn't capable....

Nope. It’s better if they are, but it works from anywhere (though you may need to open a port on your router to allow the connection through)

I like the look of this and the cost is a little lower than I'd expected. I use my Switch exclusively around my home (on the TV, in bed, laying on the sofa) and the Portal will allow me to play my PS5 (and PS4?) games in the same way. I'd love to get one!

How does this work for disc based games then? Do they need to be installed and have a disc in the PS5 drive before you can play it? What about games that run completely off disc?

Hmmn... Sony's wording doesn't mention PS4 games, just PS5; this makes me think that playing PS4 stuff won't be an option. Technically, I dunno why, though?

Milner, yeah, the device is streaming games directly from your PS5. If you have a disc version of a game then that disc would need to be in your PS5 console to play it on the Portal.

No reason it wouldn't play PS4 games as well, it's just streaming from the PS5, regardless of what that is.

Yeah, I would have thought so too, Preezy... but there doesn't seem to be any mention of PS4 games that I can find. Sony's text just indicates PS5. I can' think that it wouldn't but it feels odd that it hasn't been mentioned.

You have to wonder if Sony did even the most basic google or domain check before settling on that name.

A solid overview of the Portal by UrAvgConsumer. The device looks decent; light and with a good LCD screen (spec to be confirmed). Portal just in the first five mins of the vid.

There's a standard socket to plug in headphones but, yeah, wireless headphones have to use the new PlayStation Link system. The PlayStation Link tech will be available to use by other headphone manufacturers but this may take a while to kick in.

Why would a third party making headphones use this system over blue tooth that everything else uses?!

Isn't it the same with Xbox? And Bluetooth has latency that you don't want in gaming.

Yeah, Sony love pushing their proprietary standards (don't forget they'll charge licencing) but this one isn't going mainstream. There might be some third party headphones specifically sold for Playstation that support it, but that'll be it.

Xbox’s official headphones also support Bluetooth, I use them with my switch all the time… don’t notice any latency but I don’t know what factors into BT latency..

Yeah, my Steel Series use the Xbox wireless protocol and also have Bluetooth. And I expect any third party manufacturers who make models using Sony's new system will also support Bluetooth. So it's just the same.

Yeah I’m sure you if you own PS headphones they will work… I use my Xbox ones to listen to podcasts on my phone in the background when playing games… has a handy dial so you can choose what you listen to… I only ever play Rocket league listening to music, I never listen to the game at all… F for all the music in that game for me.

The kicker is that their *current* headphones don’t support it, only the new ones. I… think…

It’s hard to know. The current headphones need a dongle because they use a different protocol to skirt the Bluetooth latency. In an ideal world that’d be the same protocol as these but it’s probably not.

One of the previews implied this new protocol is built into the PS5 already, because they claimed the Portal can use it to stream from the console instead of WiFi when you’re close enough, but I can’t imagine that’s accurate. If the console could always do it, why would they ever have put out headphones that don’t use it? Why does the dongle exist.
