It’s over Wi-Fi.

Well that’s not going to work

Why?

If I can perfectly well play a game that’s running on an Xbox in a data centre, streamed to my house via fibre and copper, and then sent to my iPad by Wi-Fi, I think this will be fine.

Cause the wi-fi never works, it may work where Sony is but not where I am

If it is just a Wii U gamepad, this must be the most baffling decision of any game company ever in the history of the industry. The Wii U itself was quite the flop, and Sony are now trying to do the same thing literally a decade later (which they already did with the Vita, an actual console), but as an accessory for a console that has no games, and where the Switch existed for the better half of the decade. If they just made a portable PS5 that'd be something, but this is just... I mean, I've felt like Sony's choices since the PS5 have been so bizarre, does anyone know how they're actually doing? Has someone gone to check on them, are they okay?

Does this have to be on the same WiFi as your PS5? Or can you play remotely?

Right-o.

If it’s WiFi it should work exactly like a Wii U Gamepad which I never had a problem with connection wise.

Don’t think this is something I will go for in the end though, I can see use cases for it but if PS branded Backbone controller is launching at $100 then you just know this will be at least double  I would potentially pick one up when they inevitably drop to under £100 providing it’s a good device.

This seems like something that'll largely be irrelevant to most people. Sony has always chucked out loads of random bits of hardware/peripherals though and I'm comforted to see that hasn't changed.

I always get interested in stuff like this, but in reality I never actually use it. I can probably count on the fingers of one hand how many times I've played my Switch in handheld mode, and that thing can be used in more locations than just my house. Same when they let you use the Vita to Stream from your PS4.

I’m guessing the screen is a touch screen? Otherwise how will games that use the touchpad work?

Just get a controller for your phone

I'm kinda surprised at the reaction; in my eyes this is something that's gonna be far slicker than using a mobile phone or a tablet/laptop. I'm thinking how 80% of my Switch gaming is in handheld mode and 100% of that is at home... it feels like the Q could fit right into that sector.

The quality of the signal to and from the device will, of course, be critical - and that's an area where the Wii U Gamepad had an advantage as Nintendo used their own "better than wifi" tech:

Polygon wrote:The technology, co-developed by Nintendo and wireless and broadband communications giant Broadcom, marries run-of-the-mill Wi-Fi with a powerful bit of proprietary software to create a two-way stream of low-latency, high-definition video and controls between the Wii U and its innovative GamePad.

That complex suite of software is designed to mitigate interference and deliver a smooth video signal and communication speeds, said Dino Bekis, senior director of wireless connectivity at Broadcom.

The technology is built on top of something called Wi-Fi Miracast, which Broadcom first developed last summer. It's a system that is specifically designed to deal with interference issues while maintaining liquid fast two-way communication.

I wonder if Sony has developed something similar?

You don't even need to buy anything you can already use a PS5 controller and the PS app to stream PS5 games to your phone.

I tried it a couple of years ago and the streaming was fine but the controller wasn't fully supported. They've apparently fixed that now.

The Wii U gamepad also only had a resolution of 854x480, effectively SD widescreen.

The best I think you could hope for is it using WiFi direct (so Q -> PS5, rather than Q->wifi router->PS5).

I've never had the best experience with remote play,. It will work fine for 10/15 minutes until it suddenly decides to hitch and as soon as that happens it's no longer fun. I understand I probably need to get a better wifi access point but not doing that just to play games in bed.

Thinking on it more, as a product I guess it's fine. Logitech made something similar last year but they overpriced it.

It's just so unimaginative, literally bolted a DS5 onto a tablet.

I was hoping for something more akin to steamdeck in power, with PS5 and PS4 being x86 I was hoping ports would be more scabable and the portable would be able to play games on a "low" setting to borrow PC gaming vocabulary.

But whatevs.

It'll come down to price ultimately. It'll never be as convenient or as slick as using your phone or a tablet with your controller and you can get them dirt cheap second hand these days.

There's surely not much of a market for people who own a PS5 but not a phone or tablet to make an attractive price point?

I guess it's good for people who are insistent spending money on a bespoke device that can only do one thing.

Come on now. You’ll need either a stand or a clip for your phone at least, unless you have 3 hands.

And it’s all well and good people saying “just use your phone”. Have you ever received a text or a call while in remote play? It’s a disaster. “Just give up your phone” would probably be a more accurate way to describe using it for RP
