Agree with Fade, tbh.

I've tried it on my Mac and my iPhone and it's the gooseberry fools.

I suppose you can start to adjust your play to allow for the latency issue but it's just unplayable for the games I play which require perfect inputs such as EA FC24.

But ultimately, apart from the fact this is some seriously looking good hardware, it's just a doorstop as far as I'm concerned and people who don't have £200 to burn should asbolutely avoid, especially when you consider you could buy yourself an android tablet for less and have the added functionality of a web browser, apps etc.

It's interesting to hear strong views against the device by folk who haven't used it. I haven't used it either! However, the folk here who have bought it and used it are indicating that it's working well.

£200 for this, or £310 for the base model Steam Deck. Can you remote play PS5 on Steam Deck?

I use an iPad with an Xbox controller for remote Xbox play. Works absolutely fine, though I don’t play competitive stuff on it. I can see how this PS Portal would appeal to someone who strictly wants handheld play.

It seems that there is an - unofficial, of course! - utility called "Chiaki" that allows the PS5 to stream to a Steamdeck. Looking at the comments, results seem to be variable.

I feel that the JUST BUY A STEAM DECK response is like when a mini console would come out and the raspberry pi brigade would all show up.

But the Raspberry Pi was put forward as a cheaper solution but requiring more effort. Steam Deck is more expensive, but with vastly more use. I can see the appeal of all of the options. I mean, I’ve bought into Evercade, which I could have replicated with a cheaper emulator handheld.

The Portal fits my needs. I just want to be able play on the PS5 more than I was able to.

I’m fifth in line for the TV, I also don’t want to go into my office after working in there all day and sometimes I just want to lay in bed and play some games. I rarely docked my Switch.

The views I've seen haven't been that it doesn't work, rather that it is expensive and lacking in desired functionality. There's no contradiction between those views and others saying it is working well.

I haven't personally yet seen any reviews that say Portal doesn't work. As you say, sometimes the focus is on cost and functionality; the latter of which is - IMHO! - because often the reviewer wants an actual portable PS5 rather than a streaming device. Which is fine, of course, but this does not mean the Portal shouldn't exist. As we've seen here in GR, the folk who have purchased the device are reporting that it's working fine and meets their particular needs. If other folk don't like the look of the device, that's equally cool.

It's a very niche piece of equipment, but by all accounts the finished product delivers on that very narrow functionality gap really well - it's a nice screen and controller and the network performance seems solid.

I can't see it selling amazing numbers just because of how niche it is, the cost factor and the reality that a good percentage of the target market will already have a solution to achieve remote playing that meets their needs. But that doesn't mean it shouldn't exist and people can't enjoy it!

I use Remote Play quite a lot, both with Chiaki on the Steam Deck (excellent performance, especially with a few minor tweaks to the base settings!) and with my Android phone with Razer Kishi controller grip. It's a really useful way to still get some PS4/5 action in when the TV is not available!

The dream for me would be those controller sides on a switch. I bet this is great to play as the controls are exactly the same as the regular pad.

I can understand the appeal of this to some extent, since I routinely use my Steam Deck to stream from my desktop but I would have thought that for £200, and as a dedicated, Sony built piece of hardware, this would be offering a bit more than just the same Remote Play experience you could get off a phone, cradle, and the controller you already have.

It could feasibly function with the PlayStation cloud gaming service too but seemingly doesn’t do so.

Indeed it is! I was starting to think that I must have said something bad; that I must have criticised someone's viewpoint. But... no. Looking back, the only thing I said was:
