PostSony Spartacus Predictions
by Captain Kinopio » Tue Jan 25, 2022 8:17 pm

So it's pretty widely rumoured that Sony is working on its answer to Microsoft's Games Pass at the moment under the codename Spartacus, and with the acquisition of Activision Blizzard it seems that they'll surely have to go hard on it to stop a slow drip of customers away from their platform

GR being the best place on the internet for crowd sourced gaming knowledge, I want to know what you're predictions are for any service that they announced. Feel free to go free form with your answers but if you fancy a structure...

Do you think Sony will announce a Games Pass style subscription service in 2022?

Will it include day and date games for brand new Sony releases?

How much will it cost?

What will it be called?

Wild card prediction?

Full backwards compatibility for PS1,2 and 3 will be announced along the sub. Your old discs will work on the console or a huge selection of games will be available on the subscription.

My wild card prediction is that it’ll include access to Sony’s movie catalogue to some degree.

In terms of old PlayStation discs working, can the PS5 actually read CD-ROMS?

Yes.

No. I don't think Sony have the cash to do this; but, if they don't, it'll look weaker in comparison to Game Pass.

How much will it cost?
£12.99 a month.

What will it be called?
PlayStation Entertainment Pass.

Wild card prediction?
I'm struggling to think of how Sony's new pass will compete with Game Pass. I *want* it too... but it probably won't. I'd love the basic online play capability to become free but I don't think that'll happen now. Perhaps Sony will include movie access... and/or formulate some kinda Netflix / Disney+ / Spotify discounted inclusion?

I was racking my brain for what else it could include because honestly there's no way they can compete directly with GP.

Access to the movie catalogue is a pretty good prediction, maybe music to am extent too? I wonder if maybe they could make available all PSP/Vita content too.

They've got to at least find something that is a one up over GP. They can't beat them on price or volume so I wonder if they do go hard on their exclusive stuff which is clearly what people prize the most. Maybe DLC too like Nintendo's offering with the Expansion Pass

I worry a Game Pass competitor is just going to lead to Sony and Microsoft fighting over buying exclusivity for all the indie and third party stuff that would have launched on Game Pass anyway, so we just end up paying for two average services rather than one which has it all.

Ideal solution would obviously be having Game Pass on PS5 but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Finally it's time as the PS announcment stream goes live. The PS+ logo appears centre screen. The + rotates into an x. The Intellivision Amico logo slides in from the right. PS x Amico. Sony back on top again!

I’m surprised Sony doesn’t run a reward or loyalty programme (or if they do, not in the UK), which is something else they could include on this new service. Nintendo rewards you mostly for buying, whereas Microsoft rewards you for buying AND playing (by my estimation, even with moderate use of Bing/Xbox Rewards it puts 50 quid back in your pocket every year).

How does the Microsoft thing work? I would absolutely love if Sony did something to reward you for gaining trophies.

I'm exactly the kind of person who would by a £50 game I didn't really want to grind all the trophies to get £1 of a game I did want.

You get reward points for engaging with Gamepass in a way that makes it look really positive (play different gamepass games, play this specific game and do this, get achievements in gamepass games), and using Bing instead of Google. You can gamble the points you earn on what is essentially a digital scratchcard, or save up a large amount of them to get a £5 voucher or a month of Gamepass.

It is, but people love it. Chasing numbers, trying to save a few quid, having too much time on their hands, stuff like that.

I just wish the app for it was better. It’s just janky enough to look like it could suddenly lose your points balance down the back of the sofa.

Wild card prediction?

If MS carries on buying up pubs and devs, Sony's answer will be to allow Game Pass on to PS.

Self-confessed MS Rewards points freak here  I've had my Xbox for 82 days, and will likely have about £60 in MS gift cards to show for it when I finally start spending in March. (You can also exchange them for gift cards from a wide variety of other providers. You can even donate them to good causes!) I ain't gonna be sniffy about that.

They had one in the US. They recently announced it would be canned.

I have "earned" about 350 quid of Rewards points in the last 3 years with the Rewards scheme. The only thing I make a point of doing is a few Bing searches when I get to work. It's an incredible initiative, and it compels me to purchase the justification of expensive hardware items I would otherwise not allow myself (wireless headphones and almost enough now for a 1TB NvMe expansion).

I don't bother with that gooseberry fool. It's too much like work for gooseberry fool pay.
