Well, here it is... physical versions of
Assassin's Creed Shadows will require an online installation check to install the game. This is the third Ubisoft game of recent times to take this route, following Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and the upcoming Star Wars Outlaws.
The same concerns apply; yes, this won't be too much of an issue right now whilst Ubisoft keep the game's servers open but, when they later shut down that server, your disc could be useless. It halts the possibility of you being able to play the game in future years; Ubisoft will decide exactly how long you can play your game for.
For me, this is a highly concerning move by Ubisoft and I will not be purchasing their games that contain this mechanism. I just fear that other publishers could follow suit. Source:
