Also worth remembering that you can't just port current games to VR, they're not realistic enough. You have to think about camera height and the way players move around.

I think I'd be right in saying that no major console aftermarket add-on has been especially widely adopted by gamers.

Maybe Kinect was about the most successful, but console manufacturers have a history of trying to push peripherals of varying size and expense and they've mainly been crap, poorly adopted, or both (beyond extra controllers and memory cards).

I think what I'm trying to say is, if it doesn't come out the box, you may as well forget it ever really achieving massive penetration. Kennethwilliams, etc.

This generation, it might be mildly diverting, but I won't buy into it unless there are at least five killer games for it.

It needs a solid 60FPS. The resolution isn't such a big deal.

Isn't the only resolution problem with TF2 the interface?

It's more to do with the stepping effect being exaggerated in VR, also remember that the screen fills your vision, so it's not like viewing a TV that only takes up about a third.

What about the PC games that have already been modded to include VR support?

As you say, that's a lot of that work is effectively done unpaid by modders. Which of course it simply can't be, on console.

None of those really work, the games have to be designed with VR in mind.

I agree but my main issue was saying that games aren't realistic enough to include VR support.

I just watched someone play Half-Life 2 on the OR and it looked so good that I would happily buy one today to play it.

Yeah, that's absolute twaddle. Some of the best games for rift are likely to be quite abstract.

Mirrors Edge time trials DLC would be a fantastic thing to play on Rift, for example, and the abstract nature of it - as well as the basically complete lack of any HUD - would lend itself to achieving 60FPS with ease.

Impressions of Valve's prototype

http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=776513

Valve’s solution is lightyears ahead of the original Oculus Dev Kit. Resolution, while not at “retina” level perfection, was no longer really a significant issue. The screen door effect was almost completely negligible, thanks to a shiny 1080p display. (Not actually shiny, shiny like in Firefly.)

Just as fantastic was their low-persistance display tech. The display ran at a blistering 95 Hz, and the pixels only flash for approximately 20% of that 10.52 ms refresh time. You don’t notice any flickering or lack of brightness, and the plus side is that ghosting and smearing were drastically reduced. Not *completely* eliminated, mind you.

Latency? Low. Approximately 25ms. Not noticeable.

Positional tracking is an absolute must for any VR set, as lack of said tracking is the biggest cause of motion sickness, the one thing that could kill VR in its tracks. Valve’s solution was, as expected, extremely accurate. It involved sticking QR Code-like papers on the walls (so anyone visiting your home, without prior knowledge, would instantly assume you were a crazy person) so that a camera mounted on the headset could get an optical read on its own position. There was a downside (literally), though…because there were no QR codes littering the floor, looking straight down caused the system to lose its positional tracking.

There was, unfortunately, still a tether attached to the set. This never seems to be talked about with VR, but still concerns me greatly, especially after messing with VRCade’s wireless backpack system. I didn’t feel as free to roam or jump or twist as I did at VRCade, and presumably the wireless transmission back and forth to a base computer would add at least a few milliseconds of latency, but that’s a trade I would gladly make.

Vita TV thing. If it was VR, why wouldn't they live stream it?

It's a tombstone. The tarp is over the bit that reads "Xbox One 2013-2014."

Didn't know where else to put this.

I'm strawberry floating dying laughing here. The guy totally loses his gooseberry fool and I wouldn't blame him. But the cameraman's laugh is the best part.

The more of this kind of thing I see, the more I think the best VR experiences won't be games at all.
