I do think the continued utterances of Palmer wanting it to be in the $300 to $400 region were a shot in the foot, but I'm sure they were based on expectations in the costs of manufacturing the rift as well as accepting a minimal profit initially. Oh and the cost does also include some games as well.

Yeah, the big pricing disadvantage for Oculus is that they have no recurring revenue from selling Rifts. They don't create software for it and they don't have a walled-garden app store. They're a peripheral manufacturer, rather than a platform holder, and all the money that this thing is ever going to make for them has to be in the initial sale.

Palmer Luckey said it would be roughly in the ballpark of $349 though. Bit of a jump in price for the consumers and that's before you factor in the hike that people outside of America have to suffer.

I'll probably upgrade my PC when Pascal rolls around. By then we should know what's happening with PS VR and Vive.

I can see Vive being even more expensive.

Incidentally, I've put my DK2 up on eBay, if anyone's interested. It's got a little less fidelity than the consumer version, but it's only £100

Part of the price is due to it coming with a Camera (the thing on the stand), an Xbox One Controller (So £30-40 of the cost right there) and a remote control for some reason.

That doesn't sound right given the cost of the controllers themselves.

The cost of these current-gen pads is probably strawberry float all compared to what they're selling them for.

It's a number I've seen thrown around on the Oculus subreddit a few times since it was announced it would ship with an Xbox One controller. Wouldn't surprise me if they really are that overpriced in retail.

I think they already have a content store for GearVR customers and that they announced an Oculus store for the Rift at that pre-E3 press conference they had last year.

I did some market research for it a couple of months ago. It's decent and really immersive but I'm not interested in buying, it felt pretty taxing on my eyes and not like something I'd want to use for more than 30-45mins. no way worth £500+. I'd rather play a good game on a TV for now.

It could change absolutely everything though, in 5-10 years we could be looking at gaming from a completely different perspective.

I've decided I won't be buying this.

I haven't really paid much attention to the whole incoming Vr fad but it seems to me like the market is going to be very over crowded which will very likely put a dampener in the whole thing. It's all very expensive as well considering that most of their target market will have just shelled out similar figures on new consoles and accessories.

Insane pricing. Market is going to be so small it would be financial suicide without daddy Facebook. It was already a niche due to the required combination of high end hardware and no self respect, now its a niche of a niche.

This'll be to tap the enthusiasts with deep pockets. There'll be a lower spec unit releases along in a bit, I expect. Either that or they'll use mobile style contracts to get it into the hands of consumers.

Price'll fall, but right now they're aiming for the roof. Which makes sense, commericially speaking.
