Sources: leaked Assassin's Creed: Origins image is real

An off-screen image of the next Assassin's Creed game has popped up on the internet - and three separate Eurogamer sources have confirmed it is indeed legit.

The image was posted to Reddit by user "shoutouttoashraf" (a now-deleted username that looks a lot like a reference to Ashraf Ismail, a Ubisoft staffer who worked on Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag and is currently down as working on an unannounced project at Ubisoft Montreal). It depicts a player character on a boat who wields a bow and arrow and wears a shield on their back.

Last week a report by WWG.com claimed the next Assassin's Creed was called Assassin's Creed: Origins and is a series prequel. Eurogamer sources have confirmed this is indeed the name of the game, it is a prequel and it's out later this year for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The image confirms boats return to the series after starring in Black Flag. A story from 2016 by Kotaku revealed the game, then codenamed Empire, would be set in Egypt.

The image also reveals the "Assassinate the Crocodile" mission, and includes the following text: "Follow Shadya to Khenut's villa." Khenut was a Queen of Egypt and the wife of King Unas who lived during the time of the Fifth dynasty of Egypt.

With E3 just a matter of weeks away, it won't be long before Ubisoft unveils Assassin's Creed: Origins, which is hotly anticipated after the series took a year off following Syndicate. A Ubisoft representative told Eurogamer: "We won't be making a comment on any rumours or speculations."

I welcome for another Assassin's Creed game and it was a nice break for a while since Syndicate. I'd love to sail with a ship again and I thought the Black Flag was awesome.

Let's hope they will reveal more at E3 this year. :D

Nice. It'll be good to get back to the series. I've been filling the AC void by playing Watch Dogs.

I really hope this takes the series back to naval battles of Black Flag. No idea if they'd be as exciting as in that game (given the era AC:O set in), but would like to see it return all the same.

I highly recommend the sequel.

The sailing nd ship combat in Black Flag was dull as strawberry float so if that's a big part of this game then I'll be giving it a miss.

I hope they ditch the useless strawberry floating sci-fi shitty angle. That arbitrary, badly conceived and horribly implemented garbage has been ruining my historical romps for far too long!

Boats :D Awesome. That looks great. I really enjoyed Black Flag (but not the 'future' bits, obvs). Oh, and the sailing/trading stuff was great, so more of that would be great.

I also like the idea of being an archer. Yep, sign me up. This isn't the sort of series I feel compelled to buy every game in, but I've always quite enjoyed them.

I'd rather a new more open-world Prince of Persia.

After the focus on the future side and the Abstergo stuff in the film I'm not sure they're really listening to the fanbase when it comes to what people actually want from Assassin's Creed entries :dread:

I've only really played Unity, but I've got Black Flag (and Revelations now, I think). Are they worth having a look at?

Black Flag was a great laugh. IMO. But I've always really liked piratey stuff, so...

I'll be interested to see how this works on Scorpio as Digital Foundry use one of the series as a benchmark as it can scale up for more powerful hardware.
I also hope they release this with at least a few hilarious bugs as that's almost half the fun.

Unity was one of the worst AC games so yes the other two you mentioned are worth looking at. Black Flag especially.

Black Flag and Rogue are my 2 favourite AC games so hopefully Origins will follow that template, Im hoping this will be set in the Mediterranean and we get to do some proper sailing, Ill be disappointed if that shot is of some tiny boat going down the Nile! I would like to see them drop the future bits though, I know some people enjoy them and its all part of the AC lore but at least make it all optional, I know most of it is by now but at no point in the game should I be pulled out of the Animus involuntarily. If you must have future bits then at least make them as action packed as the history bits, when I have just been leaping off masts and fighting 20 guys at once, being made to walk around an office and press a button in front of a PC monitor is a serious drag.

I'm sorry but Unity was a great game. After they'd patched the hell out of it.
