From the creators of Contrast and We Happy Few, South of Midnight is a spellbinding third-person action-adventure game set in the American Deep South, coming to Xbox Series X|S (with Xbox Game Pass), Windows PC (with PC Game Pass), and Steam. As Hazel, you will explore the mythos and encounter creatures of Southern folklore in a macabre and fantastical world. When disaster strikes her hometown, Hazel is called to become a Weaver: a magical mender of broken bonds and spirits. Imbued with these new abilities, Hazel will confront and subdue dangerous creatures, untangle the webs of her own family’s shared past and – if she’s lucky – find her way to a place that feels like home.

According to Matt Booty it was going to be revealed in 2022 but got pushed to 2023 so maybe possible but I doubt it. Probably find out at a Dev Direct early next year.

We Happy Few released a while ago right? 2018/19 time? So I wouldn’t be shocked if this does drop next year. I hope it does, looked right up my alley!

Rumour is, it's a 'smaller game' ala Hi-Fi Rush.

South of Midnight – the beautiful third-person action-adventure game from We Happy Few creators Compulsion Games – showed off its first gameplay trailer during the show, ahead of its launch in 2025. We meet Hazel and her newly-revealed companion, Catfish, as they travel through a flooded area inspired by the Mississippi Delta – and quickly find themselves facing down one of the game’s monster Kings. Meet Two-Toed Tom, a gigantic albino alligator with a powerful hunger, and even his own theme song.

The trailer offers a look at combat and traversal, showing off Hazel’s magical weaving powers, and gives us a taste of the game’s darkly gorgeous Deep South setting. If you’d told me it was Kena 2 (by way of a Jak 2 mentality) I’d have believed you.

Love the setting and agree with KK about the Kena vibes (definitely not a bad thing).

Don't like the lower frame rate in the cut scenes. I understand what they were going for but I'm not keen on it. It's especially jarring when first going from gameplay to a cutscene.

Game of the show for me, loved it since the teaser and now, seeing the gameplay, absolutely adored it. Dat music. :wub:

I felt the same way. I thought my feed had gone out of sync at first.

You guys better not watch those SpiderVerse movies, you'll be fooked!

I've seen both of them and fortunately they didn't have any gameplay sections

I didn't like the Spiderman suit in Miles Morales that gave a funky frame rate, so i'm guessing you're right.

I really like the look of this, particularly the traversal and combat (reminded me of Infamous).

The more I watch this the more it grows on me. I do think the gameplay needs to offer more as what is in the trailer is very much by the numbers but the setting and visual design are excellent

Think it warrants me giving it a second watch.

What I really liked about this is how the setting felt quite original and something a bit different. I like how the American Deep South setting isn't really where you'd immediately think to go for this type of world.
